when tobi attacked knoha he pretty much proved that he was bad ass.but later after he crushed tobi he went to fight karuma.he teleported the tailed beast bomb to a faraway location but instead he could have telaported it back to karuma and highly damaging it.then he could have defeated karuma without death reaper soul technique avoiding his death.so
actually he isin't smart as people say.he's just bad ass thats all.

1) Redirecting the TBB means that Konoha is under threat
2) I doubt Minato would be eager to die when he had just had a son, RDS was probably the only seal that could have worked.

Its still an unnecessary risk. Besides, he wasn't trying to kill kurama, he had the plan of sealing kurama inside his son. Not only was minato thinking of ways to defeat tobi/kurama during that incident, he also planned for the future of his son to be who he is today...the strongest jinchuuriki, and the savior of the Naruto world. If that doesn't sound like the plan of a genius then I don't know what does
