I'd say he was as good as one could have been between juggling responsibilities to the people in his charge and his son. What little he could do for Naruto shaped him into a man others could trust in, a person that could be admired and followed. Naruto looked up to Minato before he found out about his parentage. Obviously he had a great deal of respect for him.

well he didn't raise or have any interaction with naruto through his whole life since he was like DEAD, but i would say he did what any parent would do and died for his child albeit he didn't have to, but such is the plot that he did have to.
