If I were to title this chapter I would probably call it "goodbye" or better yet "sayonara." I was going to include this part with part 21 but in order to use part 21 as a way to say what happened afterwards i went ahead and wrote this part 20 instead of the original rough draft, which was about Kakashi. Anyway, enjoy:
Part 20
"Eight signed seal."
Minato closed his eyes, smiling, and tightened his arms around Kushina. He would NOT let go of her, not even in death.
"You've failed yondaime."
"Nine tails." Minato's eyes snapped open to reveal a different scenery. The nine tailed fox demon was behind the bars born from the tetragram seal, and Naruto was lying in the ritual alter between them.
Minato looked at his hands. They were light orange and transparent.
"What is this?" He narrowed his eyes.
"Heh." Nine tails sneered. "This is a combination of our three psyches. But I've been split in two thanks to you, Naruto's a useless infant, and you're almost dead! So this place is all fuzzy an unstable!"
Minato looked up at him. "Useless? Hardly. He already makes a good vessel for you."
"You konoha ninja really are the lowest of the low!" Nine tails rammed his cage, trying to escape. "Feeding your spouses and even your own children to the wolves!"
Minato looked down. "Cruel? Maybe. But even so, we are a family of shinobi. I'm sure he will understand someday..."
"That's just your excuse!" Nine tails loured. "Expecting him to bear the same burden as Kushina, accept it as his responsibility even though he's just a baby, and forgive you is entirely selfish. Besides, you can't do this! Not to Naruto! Admit it! You'll be killing him, Yondaime!"
His face tightened into one of pain.
Kill...?
YEARS EARLIER
"Lord Raiden! The rebels have broken through our defenses! The clan is being slaughtered!"
Minato sat in his mothers lap, watching his father take in the situation.
"Kill them all." He ordered. "Citizens that won't bend to the will of their leader should perish."
Minato's face was expressionless, but inside there was chaos.
How was this possible? In what way was this right? Why would father think that? And why was mother staring on, not doing anything?
"Fa--" he started to say, but his mother pushed him into her.
"We have no choice but to use the hostage, sir. It might be our one way of claiming victory!"
"No..." Father looked devious. "We'll turn the hostage into an example. They'll be so horrified they're formations will fall apart. Then we can march in and destroy them. Bring the hostage to me."
"But sir! That could only make the situation worse! And we're outnumbered a thousand to one!"
"Bring her to me."
Moments later, Minato's heart fell into his throat as Mikoto was dragged into the room.
"No..!" He broke free of his mothers arms. "Father, don't!"
"Be quiet, Minato." He ordered. "I'm assuring our victory."
"You mean yours!" Minato ran over to him, grabbing his leg. "I don't want to be apart of this!"
"M-Minato!" Mikoto cried. "Help me!"
Father shoved him away and brought a kunai out.
"Watch closely Minato." He told him "Youll thank me for this one day."
He brought the kunai down on her. A screech and a leap later, Minato was in front of Mikoto, stabbing Father in the gut with his own knife.
Blood dripped onto his face. He'd never been so horrified. Behind him, Mikoto was crying.
"M-Minato..."
Minato looked up. Father was dying slowly. He pulled his knife out, and watched him stumble backward.
"You are no different from the rest of us." Father told him. "Sooner or later you'll... Face that reality... Go ahead and find another family... Escape with that girl... You'll kill your own flesh and blood just like now..."
PRESENT
"Ha! You've realized the truth." Nine tails grinned. "You can't do this, admit it! You'd rather die than betray your own son! You're too soft! You've failed! All your promises will become lies, and you know it! However you can still free me! The seal isn't quite complete yet! You can save Naruto and free me! Do it now!"
Lies? Failed...?
He picked Naruto up in his arms, holding him close.
It wasn't supposed to be like this. He was supposed to protect Naruto and Kushina, and live together with them in konoha.
He was going to protect Uchiha,
change Hyuga,
and watch over the village as hokage until he was an old man. He was going to raise Naruto to be like the hero in Jiraiya-Sensei's book.
He wanted to get to know his friends children better.
They were all still babies. Naruto as well. None of them would remember him. One day, when they learned the truth of what he had done to Naruto, they would all hate him. Naruto would hate him...
"What are you doing?" Kushina asked, placing one hand beneath Naruto's head and the other on his belly. "I thought you made your decision! I even agreed to let you have this argument!"
"But I..." He muttered.
"But nothing!" Kushina insisted. "You said so yourself, this is the only way to save everyone! It's a solution of the last resort! He's our son... I can't imagine that he'd hate you."
"What about the Uchiha...?"
"We'll have to trust Mikoto and Fugaku with that!" Kushina smiled, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes. "It's their family, I'm sure they'll come up with something.
It's sad though... I wanted to protect them from Danzo too. I wanted to watch Itachi, Sasuke, and Naruto grow up together.
Guess that's impossible now. It's okay though... I'm sure they'll be good freinds anyway..."
"Yondaime, don't do this to me!"
Minato and Kushina looked up at the beast, with new resolution.
"Nine tails, you are our enemy..." Minato told him. "But tell you this: do not think you'll be a savage beast for much
longer."
"Yondaime!!!"
"Minato..."
Kushina and he were fading. There wasn't much time left. Without letting go of Naruto, they kissed one final time.
The next time he opened his eyes, he sat on a cliff at sunset, overlooking the ocean. Except for the sound of the waves, everything was completely silent. Kushina was nowhere to be seen.
He sighed and looked up at the endless sky.
"Guess ill be here a while..."
Part 20
