Part 17

Minato woke with a gasp, sitting bolt upright. It took him a moment to realize the heavy breathing was coming from himself.

He placed his hand over his forehead and focused his vision.

That dream again. How strange...

"Minato? You awake."

He smiled and got out of bed. Kushina Always got up before him to cook breakfast.

After pulling on some clothes he opened the door with a yawn and wandered into the kitchen.

"You're awake!" She said from the table, where she was sitting with a plate of plain bread.

"Are you okay?" He asked as soon as he noticed there was nothing cooking and she also looked kind of content sitting
perfectly still for once in her life.

"Well..." She frowned, confused, "I opened the fridge this morning to get out some ingredients and... Well for some reason the very sight of everything in there made me nauseous. Maybe I have a stomach ache..."

"Is that why you're eating just bread?" Minato asked as he opened the fridge. Everything was fresh. Or not expired.

"Yeah."

He looked at her. That tone implied she was deeply concerned over something...

"What are you not telling me?" He asked, shutting the door and straightening up before walking over to her.

She but her lip and glanced at him, then looked away.

"Well, I didn't want to worry you..." She said, resting her head on her hand. "But I think I'm getting **** or something."

"That ISN'T something you should hide." He scolded. "Ever. Especially not from me. How sick do you mean?"

She stood up, wringing her hands. "Well over the past few days I've been taking naps inbetween housework while you're out, and I've been eating very little, and using the restroom like 20 times in the same five minutes, and breathing has become a little difficult, but the worst part is... I'm late..."

"Late to what?" He tilted his head at her.

She stared pointedly at him.

It dawned on him, making him gasp.

"Oh... That." He looked away, blushing and rubbing the back of his head. It wasn't that he was oblivious to such... Feminine trials. But these weren't the kinds of things he was knowledgable about. In fact, he tried not to think about them.

"Kushina, this is serious." He locked eyes with her, angry. "As a medic ninja, you know not to hide these--"

"Be quiet, you know it all!" She bellowed, jabbing her finger at his chest. "I'm the medic ninja here! I don't need YOU to
point out to ME what serious symptoms these are!"

"Then why didn't you go see Lady Tsunade?" He asked. "Did you tell anyone at all? Or did you expect it all to go away on its own? How can I leave you here on your own if your just going to--"
His cheek burned after her slap. As surprised as he was, she looked more surprised. Clapping her hands over her mouth she rushed to the sink, leaned over and vomited.

This was more shocking. Never in his life had he seen Kushina vomit. Or get sick. Not once. Not even when she ate that moldy gyoza by mistake.

He held her hair up while she finished. Afterwards she was looking worse, and she felt cold. She was even shaking.

"Kushina...?" He asked. "You hear me...?"

He she looked up at him in a daze. Her eyes rolled back in her head and her knees gave out.

He caught her, trying to keep calm while scooping her up in his arms.

The hidden exit in the bedroom wall led to the private hospital rooms, used only for when the hokage and Jinchuuriki and other important village authorities were deathly injured or ill. Such things didn't happen often, but when they did
the village couldn't afford to let them become public knowledge.

After laying her down on one of the hospital beds, he summoned Tsunade. Apparently she was in the middle of some more gambling. Her mood was very sour.

"Lose again?" He asked.

She immediately got up. "What is wrong with you, yondaime?! Summoning me out of nowhere like that!"

"But this is an emergency!" He pointed to Kushina, who was still sleeping.

Tsunade waited impatiently while Minato explained what had happened moments earlier and everything Kushina told him.

"Hmm." She was looking at him funny, as if expecting him to be ashamed or embarrassed like some child who had committed some horrible crime.

"I think I know what's wrong with her." She told him after a while. "Don't worry, she's fine."
Minato was taken aback by this. "Fine? How is she fine?"

"Give me some time to make sure." She waved him off. "You should go back and take care of that mess. Then go to the Kage building. Act perfectly normal, like nothing's wrong. Tell no one about this, not even your close freinds."

He did as she asked, taking care of the mess in the sink before pulling on his long, white yondaime coat and hokage
hat. The day was spent like many others, filling out paperwork, assigning missions to the proper cells, and spending some time in his office with the books about clan history. The Hyuga and the Uchiha were especially dark. The Uzumaki seemed so tragic...

Apparently, almost every member of he clan was jinchuuriki. They possessed no tailed beasts, so all were minor. Some lived in foreign enemy countries as jinchuurikis to the local lords or daimyo there in a way to appease them, to protect the senju and konoha village. They became sacrifices to peace out of love for their family. Love that bound them so tightly it was impossible to betray those they loved. It was unknown if this was a blessing or a curse...
Kushina...

"Yondaime...?"

He looked up, greeting the boy with a smile.

"How often are you going to keep letting your father send you here to check on me, Itachi?"

The boy closed the door behind him. "It's not surveillance or anything. I wanted to talk with you, yondaime."

"About what?"

Itachi approached him, very serious.

"Please send me on missions more appropriate to someone of my caliber."

"Don't speak so arrogantly." Minato warned, turning the page.

Itachi shook his head. "No. I'm not trying to be arrogant. I'm oy saying I could put myself to better use for the sake of
the village on missions that involve eliminating enemies."

Minato locked eyes with him. "Itachi, I cannot do that. You're more talented than I was at that age, I will give you that. You deserve better missions. But we all have to work our way up."

"I've been doing that for years." He threw his arms out at Minato. "I don't mean to insult you, yondaime but I'm sure I can give more to the village. You don't have to..."

Minato glanced up from his page. Itachi looked a little tormented. Guilty.

"You don't have to protect me from them." He finished.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Minato lied curtly. "I suggest you leave before I have you escorted out."

"Don't lie, Minato-dono. It's beneath you." Itachi stated, making Minato wince.

"I overheard father and mother talking." He admitted. "They were saying the black ops foundation head has been keeping an eye on me. My maturation is unique for even the Uchiha, and you are trying to keep me from revealing just how special I am to keep me safely within the regulated boundaries of the mission-rank coordinated system. But I know it is not for me. You are doing this out of affection for mother and father, your freinds. I myself am--"

"Wrong." Minato stood, walking around his desk to kneel in front of the boy. "You are not oblivious to me."

He knocked his forehead against Itachi's. "It's not simply for my childhood freind Mikoto or my best freind Fugaku or the village I love or the other Uchiha who treat me like family. You, Itachi, are important to me.

"And it is not just you. This place is not just a village to me. Each and everyone within the village walls is someone I truly care for and worry for. All the citizens, shinobi and non, are important to me. They are my family. Do not become confused, Itachi, as Fugaku used to be. Fugaku who used to complain to me about how all of his own hard work went to the credit of his clan. Believe me: I know it's hard to see, but no matter what family you're born into, you are more than just the blood running through you. You are Uchiha Itachi of Konoha. Never forget that."
Itachi didn't break eye contact, but seemed to accept Minato's words.

"Uchiha Itachi of Konoha would like you to approve his request, sir."

Minato petted his head. "Get the next rank and I'll think about it."

"I will." He promised, and turned to leave, hesitating. "Father said he wanted to you to come visit mother sometime soon. He said to give this to you."

Minato took the paper scrap from Itachi, and unfolded it.

It read: "her boobs got bigger," with a drawing of a tiny, poker faced Fuji giving a victory sign.

"Ummm..." Minato blinked at it.

"Is it something perverted?" Itachi asked nonchalantly before Minato ushered him out the door.

Immediately after, the trapdoor in his floor popped open and Lady Tsunade climbed out.

"Well it's what I thought." She told him. "Sorry for the wait, I had to make sure to tell you once you were alone."

"Is she okay?" He asked, all of his concern and built up anxiety threatening to tumble out.

Tsunade clapped her hands down on his shoulders.

"Minato," she smiled at him. "Kushina is going to be a mom."

His eyes widened a little.

"Hm?"

"MINATO," Tsunade said clearly. "Kushina is pregnant. You're going to be a father. She's going to be a mother. Minato, you're going to have a baby. Around early October. Congratulations."

Minato struggled to move, to speak.

"Really?" He asked. "I'm going to be a father...? And Kushina, a mother? Are you sure?"

Tsunade smiled. "Yes. Congratulations."

"Can I see her?" He asked.

"Yes, but she needs her rest." Tsunade pointed out. "Summon me from time to time, at least once every two weeks or once. a month so I can check on her. Keep this secret. If people find out you are having a child, terrible things will happen. It could get the baby killed before he's even born."

"Yes, thank you lady Tsunade." He said, sending her back to where she came.

He rushed down the stairs, closing the door gently behind him and stopped in front of the doorway.

Kushina just smiled at him and waved.

"Um... Are you okay?" He asked.

"Of course!" She beamed, then softened. "Are you okay Minato?"

He gulped and stalked over, taking her hand in both if his and sitting down beside her.

"I'm okay." He replied. "Happy. This is... One of the happiest days of my life."

Kushina laughed nervously. "We'll I'm glad you're happy. I'm very nervous. Kids don't seem to like me that much, and...
What kid wants the jinchuuriki everybody hates for a mom? What if he hates me too?"

"That's impossible!" Minato shot to his feet. "He'll adore you! You'll be a wonderful mother."

"Well, lets just hope he doesn't look like me." She tapped her finger against her bottom lip. "I want him to be just like
you Minato. To look and sound just like me."

"That's not something I want." Minato knit his brow. "There are things I can't do. Things I don't want to pass on. But you Kushina... You're beautiful, and strong and clever. If he has to look like me, fine, but I want him to have your spirit."

"Actually, lady Tsunade didn't say it would be a boy." She pointed out.

"Eh? Then how do you know?"

Kushina patted her stomach. "Gut feeling. But we can check in a few months to be sure."

He placed his hand over her stomach.

"I swear I'll protect you both." He vowed.

Kushina grinned, punching the air with her fist.

"Don't talk like I'm helpless!" She warned. "I'm the mom! Moms always protect their babies! Anybody who touches him will pay the ultimate price!"

Minato laughed, stopping suddenly as the same dream from that morning flashed through his mind. The details were now forgotten, but he was certain of what he saw.

Nine tailed fox, which was currently sealed inside Kushina, and the Susano'o. A rare ability within Uchiha that even Fuji didn't possess. Both seemed to be locked in a life and death battle.

"Minato?" She brushed his bangs back with her hands. "Are you sure you're okay? You seem a little... Shaken."
He swallowed and nodded.

"I'm fine. I was just remembering a strange dream I had this morning."

But for some reason, that felt like a lie.
