Sorry again. This is yet another chapter with limited to no Kushina involvement. I cried writing this, but best to get it done and out of the way. I tried to do justice to this part of Minato's story, as it is one of the biggest. I get the feeling I screwed up last chapter. Thank you everyone who posted that they enjoyed it. Please enjoy this new chapter. Next chapter will be all about Minato and Kushina I promise. Also, part way through I remembered that Itachi was still in the academy when Sasuke was little (See picture). So please excuse the plot hole!
Heres part 15
part 15
Minato was relieved to see the village again after so long. Even though the war was still hot, people were trying to live peaceful ordinary lives while contributing in whatever ways they could. Thanks to Konohas strict security, the enemy fire never reached this far, and civilians could raise their children so that they were somewhat ignorant of the violence raging outside.
Well, not all of them. Many children met their end on the battlefield. Like Obito…
Fuji slapped Minato on the back. “C’mon. I wanna go see my kid. You’re coming to congratulate him, right?”
Minato put on a cheerful face. “Of course.”
Minato graduated when he was ten years old, one of the youngest genin in history alongside Kushina, who received her headband at the same time. However, Itachi, Fuji’s son, had one-upped, graduating three years earlier than they had, at age seven. And without the sharingan. It was a cause for celebration.
“Mikoto invited some friends over.” Fuji waved Mikoto’s letter at him. “Apparently they’ve been celebrating for a few days. But most just got sent off on a long-term assignment, so the only ones at the house right now are Kushina and Mikoto.”
Minato hid his joy. Kushina. It had been too long. His mission with Fuji to the hidden clouds battlefield had taken them months, and they were only just returning. So neither of them had seen their girls in a while. Kushina couldn’t send Minato letters, like Mikoto could for Fuji, since their relationship was still classified. However Mikoto was very kind, including news of her friends and the rest of the Uchiha’s daily activities, so Minato wasn’t completely Kushina-deprived.
The house was very clean and didn’t look like a party site at all. Itachi, ever serious, was lying on the floor in the living room, reading a book that looked too big for him to carry.
“Hello, Father.” He got to his feet and stalked over to Fuji, who picked him up so they could speak on eye level.
“Your mom said in her little that you’re a man now. You went and became a genin while I was gone?”
Itachi nodded.
“Sorry for missing the ceremony.” Fuji apologized. “We can train together later to make up for it.”
Itachi hesitated. “Don’t you have work? Mom said not to bother you..”
“It’s okay I’ll make time.”
Minato frowned. Times like these made him just a little jealous of Fuji, who could freely spend time with his wife and son without having to worry about others.
“Wheres your mom and that crazy redhead?” Fuji asked.
“They went to the hospital…” Itachi explained.
Both men looked very worried
“Why?” They asked in unison.
“A boy Lady Kushina knows came back in bad shape.” Itachi said. “That’s what the anbu said. That the boy was brought back from a bloody mist battlefield, and his comrade died in front of him, so lady Kushina ran to him and mom said to stay here and tell you when you got back…”
Minato took a step back towards the door. His stomach did multiple back flips. His heart hurt in various ways…
“Which boy Itachi?” Fuji asked, trying to turn so Minato wouldn’t be able to hear.
“Kakashi Hatake.”
Minato didn’t wait for the two of them. He was out the door and down the street in the blink of an eye, heading for the hospital. Many of the Uchiha were looking sympathetic, as were the other villagers…
Rin…
He reached the door to Kakashi’s room only to be stopped by Jiraiya-Sensei.
“Hold on, Minato.” Jiraiya pushed him back with both hands on both of Minato’s shoulders.
He didn’t listen and moved his teacher out of the way, turning the doorknob and taking one step in.
Kushina, Mikotom, and Lady Tsunade were standing around Kakashi, who was awake but in some kind of trance or daze. Even if Minato tried to, he wouldn’t have been able to get his attention.
“Minato…” Kushina said, her face falling.
“Minato… Um, Kakashi is—” Mikoto began.
Tsunade stalked over and gently closed the door on his face.
Another hand gripped his shoulder getting his attention.
“Lord Hiruzen…”
“Minato, I need you to come with me for a moment.” His eyes were probably the most apologetic of all.
Lord Third led Minato back to the hokage building, to a secret underground soundproof room used to discuss information Konoha couldn’t afford to leak. There, he was told everything.
Almost immediately after Minato and Fuji were sent to the hidden cloud, there was a secret raid within konoha. A few children were kidnapped, and among them was Rin. They were taken back to the hidden mist, and tested on. The mist had a plan to have the three new three tailed jinchuuriki attack Konoha from the inside. In the end, Rin was chosen as the best for this plan, and the others were killed in cold blood.
Kakashi saved Rin, and escaped with her. However thee mist ninja hunted them down, and attacked them. Rin was aware of their plan, and chose to protect her village by sacrificing herself. She jumped in front of Kakashi’s chidori, commiting suicide.
“Apparently Kakashi fainted after that.” Lord third finshed. “Some of our anbu, who were the others sent to recover Rin, found him. He was the sole survivor of some kind of massacre. The mist shinobi were in pieces. The only whole corpse was Rin herself. We thought at first it was Kakashi who finished them off, but… He woke up for a moment some time ago, long enough to fill us in. He was asking who defeated the enemy… “
The door opened behind Minato. “Its possible he did it and is suffering amnesia from the trauma.”
Minato looked over his shoulder. “Danzo…”
The old man tapped his walking stick on the ground. “What a shame she died. If she were successfully brought back, we could have had two jinchuurikis, one we could actually use.”
Minato was shocked. “What…”
What did you do? Did you have something to do with this… So help me, I’ll…
“…Are you saying?” Minato glared. “Bequiet. Rin’s death is not equivalent to a broken tool.”
“You fool, of course it is.” Danzo argued. “That is what shinobi are. Tools for their homeland to use, however they please.”
“No!” Minato shouted. “You are wrong. Ninjas… They are not simply tools. They are humans! With rights! Our children don’t deserve this kind of fate. But you are more than willing to give it to them, in order to achieve your ambitions. You have thrown away your humanity, Danzo! You are only interested in power and social standing! If that means killing your comrades and people in cold blood, then you will stoop to that and even lower if you have to. But trust me when I say this..”
He advanced, towering over Danzo, who didn’t take a single step back or show an ounce of fear.
“It is all in vain.” Minato promised. “Reach and grasp for the seat of hokage all you want. Stare at it mourn for it, and fail. Because it will never be yours.”
Danzo laughed, looking at lord third with disappointment. “This is the person who has your hokage vote? He behaves like a child throwing a tantrum after a stranger punches him.”
“At least I know who to hit.” Minato told him. “Beware, Danzo. Curses always come home to roost. If you continue these warped judgments, eventually one of our own will throw it back at you.”
“Karma, hmm?” Danzo mulled over. “I am not a frail old man, as you would hope to believe, Minato. I won’t be taken care of that easily.”
“Enough you two.” Lord Hiruzen ordered. “Danzo, do not speak to Minato that way. Minato, likewise. Above all else, the hokage is the one who must exercise self control especially in hard times like these.”
Minato clenched his fists and stepped away from Danzo.
“Forgive me.” He bowed his head. “It was unfair of me to accuse you of such treachery without sufficient proof.”
“You are forgiven.” Danzo replied curtly, and left.
“Minato, I’m sorry.” Lord Hiruzen bowed his own head while Minato straightened up. “He has always been… a very difficult person. But I want to believe he has our villages best interests at heart.”
Minato knew a million things he wanted to say to that, but he couldn’t trust himself to speak right now…
He left without saying anything and returned to the hospital. Kakashi was now awake, facing the window and
watching the sunset. The med kit that Rin had given him long ago sat on his bed beside him.
Minato walked around to see his face. His eyes were starting to clear the fog away, but he was still lost.
Minato picked up the medkit, fingering it, turning it over in his hands, and setting it down on the table before taking a seat next to Kakashi.
He stared out the window for a moment before looking at Kakashi and gasping.
Tears. There was no expression, but he was crying endlessly.
Minato grit his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut, then slammed a hand down on Kakashi’s shoulder.
“Rin…” He began. “Was a remarkable ninja. She was a peace-loving, sweet girl. She loved you very much, no matter how you felt about her. She took flowers to the memorial stone every day.
“She deserved better than this.
“I… When I first became your teacher, I was determined to train you so well that you would survive the odds and see the day when the war was over. After losing Obito, I realized the truth: that no matter how hard you strive, the people close to you can become sacrifices anyway. I thought I was already aware of that… But… Really Obito’s death enlightened me. I wasn’t expecting this either though. I wanted you two… to survive… and one day be happy together. For your sake as well as Obito’s. However, Rin died anyway…”
Minato shed afew tears of his own then quickly wiped them away.
“I’m sorry…” He narrowed his eyes at the floor. “I’ll stop making excuses. I know what you must be feeling now… Is painful. But, listen to this… And please believe me. Though dead, they are not gone. Rin and Obitos friendship will come to you again. The salvation for the pain you’re feeling now will be found in the form of other friends. I promise, Kakashi.”
A moment passed. Kakashi wped his face dry with the back of his arm and got up to close the curtains.
“Thank you…” He said. “Sensei…”
