Part 13
Minato checked the war infirmary, set up a good distance from the battlefield. Only when he saw the three of them together, alive, with only minor injuries did he relax.
Obito had a bandaged hand. Kakashi was missing a shirt and was having his left shoulder and arm be treated by Rin, who seemed to be lost in deep concentration and focus.
“That was the lamest mission ever.” Obito complained, crossing his legs. “We’re in the middle of a war! We should be fighting the enemy, not recuperating here! We’ve got more stamina than those old geezers anyway.”
Kakashi glowered at him. “That’s not how you talk about the senior ninjas who have to die and kill on the battlefront. Righ Minato-Sensei?”
Minato laughed as he came to stand by Obito. “True. Still Im happy you three are in such good condition. Rin, take a break. You’re chakra is getting low. I can tell just by looking at you.”
She exhaled a long, heavy breath and wiped so much sweat off her face that her sleeve was soaked instantly.
“But Kakashi’s wounds are cut too close together.” She blinked, sleepy. “If we don’t heal it quickly it’ll fester and become infected.”
Minato pushed Rin’s hands away gently to examine kakashis wounds. She was right. Even with all her energy the two deep gashes were bleeding heavily.
“How did this happen?” Minato asked.
Both Kakashi and Obito looked away, embarrassed and ashamed.
“Obito accidentally set off a more clever trap than the others.” Rin explained while taking deep breaths. “Kakashi was covering for us when…”
Minato grit his teeth a little. A simple mission like trap disarment should’ve been a cinch for these three. And yet this wasn’t the first time this had happened… Lately simple war missions were landing them in a heap of trouble. Kakashi almost always came back with severe wounds, though not life threatening they were still trouble…
This might not be a coincidence. Minatos reputation had grown, and the name “yellow flash” was known across the continent. But that might not be it…
Kakashi was lord Sakumo’s son. Could that be why…?
“Asuma!”
Minato as well as the three kids whirled. Asuma Sarutobi looked worse than Kakashi, with blood pouring from many wounds. There were burns around his neck, and bruises up and down both arms.
“Asuma!” Rin called and tried to get up.
Minato trapped her in a hug.
“No, you must rest.” He ordered. “Your chakra is too low. You’re of no use to him. Let the others save Asuma.”
“But I can--!”
“No.” He said, dismissing he conversation. “You three stay here and recuperate. I’m sorry, but this probably wont be the last time this happens. Your friends will be on the verge of dying, and you’ll be unable to help. Either others will come and help them, or no one will.”
Obito was outraged. “How can you say that? Its not like you!”
“Its exactly like me.” Minato argued. “You’ll find I am a practical person. I’ll always be truthful with you, even when it’s the hard truth. Now I have to go.”
“Where are you going?!”
“To the battlefield.” Minato answered. “You three stay put. If you don’t recover enough to be sent out on more missions, then you wont be able to help the other children at all.”
Minato appointed another medic ninja in charge of Kakashi, making sure to tel him not to let the three young ninja out of his sight, and dashed outside. On his way out, he noticed several small bodies covered with sheets.
Because of a decline in national power, the reign of the Five Great Countries was crumbling. Along their borders, skirmishes with smaller nations broke out all the time. The prolonged war gradually spread its fires far and wide, until at last it developed into the Third Shinobi World War. This war turned into an unprecedented war of attrition, tormenting all nations with a shortage of war potential. Not even excluding a great power like Konoha, very young children were thrown unto the battlefield, losing their short lives.

I wont let them end up sacrifices of this silly war over greed and power, Minato decided as he traveled to the battlefield.
As soon as he appeared on the ledge overlooking the northern battlefield, he was disgusted. Too many ninja from both sides lay dead. Young or old, man or women, adult or child. None of that mattered. In this war, even a baby with a toy shuriken would be considered an enemy.
He threw kunai everywhere, enough to cover a fifty meter radius of the battlefield. They burrowed down deep within the soil, hiding themselves.
He flew. When Minato used his teleportation technique, his eyes were like a hawks. He used everything to his advantage, and decided who was enemy and who was ally. The clothing style, the design of the kunai, the forehead protector. He watched everything, even chakra flow. A rat in a hole wasn’t safe from Minato.
With his help, they drove the enemy back. They left their belongings and fallen warriors scattered amongst the rubble. Everyone gave a battle cry of victory.
However Minato noticed things. Hayate, a classmate of his students was writhing in pain on the ground. As he ran to help him, he noticed just how bad the massacre was. Doing a mental count of the bodies, he narrowed his eyes.
516. A quarter of which was children, some no older than Itachi.
How long would this go on?
