I think they were said to be about equal. Obviously though Minato is stronger than old Hiruzen though.

I dont remember where it states his reason for giving up his position as Hokage. He was getting old and at some point he had to give up his position anyway, so why not to minato, actually Hiruzen said he actually wanted Jiraiya to suceed him but he refused.

I will always go with Hiruzen, The Professor, 3rd Hokage, God of Shinobi, and the teacher of the 3 Legendary Sannin.

Minato is surely better than old Hiruzen, but we don't know how good prime Hiruzen was, so it's hard to tell.

I'd say Minato, simply because I don't know how powerful Hiruzen was in his prime.

Kishi said himself that in his prime, Hiruzen was the most powerful Hokage ( in the 2nd or 3rd Databook, forget which). In Part 1, Jiraiya said that Minato had the potential to become the strongest ninja that ever lived, but he died before all of that potential was realized, what with him dying in his twenties and all. A echoed this in Part 2, as he said that Minato's skills were so far advanced that he didn't think anyone could ever surpass him.
