I'm with you 100%. That was the PERFECT way for Gai to go out. He stalled enough time for Naruto and Sasuke to be revived, and he put in some work with damaging Madara. He would've had a respectable death comparable to Jiraya's imo

This really sums it up. It'll take a combination of Naruto AND Sasuke to actually revitalize and save Gai. So it's either that or Naruto graciously gave Gai enough to time to impart his final words and goodbyes to Kakashi and Lee before dying.
