If Gai knows about the 5 second interval for the Deva Path, he can force Nagato to use ST with Asa Kujaku, and during the cooldown finish him off with a direct Hirudora. Gai has the speed to dodge projectiles from the Asura Path, and Preta Path is pretty much useless as Gai only uses taijutsu.
