In a ninja world where the most powerful characters all rely on ninjutsu and, even if skilled and strong in CQC, still aren't certainly pure taijutsu users, Might Guy managed to be one of the most powerful characters ever seen with only pure speed, strength and skill in taijutsu (
As said, Gai is the Eternal Rival of a shinobi of Kakashi's caliber and relevance, as it was foreseen by Sakumo Hatake (
Shippuden and especially War Arc Kakashi would steamroll part 1 Kakashi in everything, feats, obviously, and hype and portrayal too. Kakashi trained and powered up himself and so did his Eternal Rival, Gai. Kakashi has been, clearly, one of the biggest players in the Fourth Ninja War and the same can be said for Gai. While Kakashi was the nemesis of Obito (
Deidara, an S-ranked ninja and Akatsuki member, hyped by Pain himself as a valuable asset for the organization, willing to take on Itachi, Orochimaru and Hebi Sasuke, was trying to avoid as best as he can to fight Kakashi at the beginning of Shippuden, even trying to make him go against Sasori to help Sakura and Chiyo, saying that Sasori was even stronger than he was, so Kakashi should have let Naruto fight alone to go help Sakura and Chiyo instead. Deidara was at Kakashi's mercy even when Kakashi was at his beginning with Mangekyo (
Gai is able to utilise and open all of the Eight Gates, since he mastered the Hachimon Tonko, where most people are unable to even start to learn Hachimon Tonko because of how hard are the physical requirements (
Base Gai handled Obito's Kamui phasing/warp touching in CQC far better than Minato did. Minato was captured by young Obito's chain and had to use Hiraishin to dodge (
Gates allow Gai to progressively enhance his already impressive level of physical speed and strength (
With 7th Gate boost, Gai becomes able to use Hiru Tora. While Asa Kujaku is a non stop quick sequence of supersonic blows plus flaming shockwaves, created by Gai punchin so fast that he burns the air, Hiru Tora is a powerful blow created by Gai punching so fast that it create an air pressure bomb; it is much more powerful than even Asa Kujaku, as Gai himself states (
Not to mention that Gai's Hiru Tora was able to stomp away and destroy Madara's V3 Susanoo, so it makes no sense, again, for Kisame, as tough as he is, to survive it, but since Gai didn't want to kill him in the first place, and had Hiru Tora weakened underwater, here's how Kisame didn't die by that. Gai was wounded and worn out, yet he still managed to launch Hiru Tora before Madara could end his Susanoo sword attack on Naruto; Madara had Gai in front of him and yet wasn't able to do anything in time and was stomped away together with his Susanoo (
7th Gate Gai's speed is incredible, he is hella fast, far more than Minato or V2 Ei for example. Gai with the 7th Gate pressured Juudara far more than SM Minato did (with a far slower Edo Madara being able to casually react and block Ei's fastest speed while being already busy to dodge Mei Terumi's Yoton ninjutsu and with Gaara, who witnessed Ei's max speed and even Ei's max speed lightned by Onoki, being impressed by Gai's speed to the point of calling Gai's movements "not human"): Minato tries to surprise Juudara with Hiraishin to land Rasengan but Juudara react with ease and counterhits by cutting the attacking arm and then kicking Minato away like shit, with Minato not being able to react and use Hiraishin in both istances, Minato isn't even able to end the attack he was trying, before he is swapped away (
After opening the 8th Gate, Gai's power level, already stated to be more than equal to everyone in the Akatsuki (
8th Gate Gai's is not only incredibly fast, his strength and power output is also out of the world. Juubi jinchuriki Obito's Gudodama shield can protect him from the explosion of four Juubi Bijuu Dama (
In spite of the Gates, other than their power up, being something that pose great strain and damage for the body of their user (
Other than his total mastery of taijutsu, with his own special moves, and incredible physical stats in speed, strength and stamina, the capabilities that make him one of the most powerful character in the Naruto series, Gai showed also some other interesting feats. Gai is an experienced shinobi who is a lot more smarter than he looks, by his sparring fights against Kakashi he created a fighting style to avoid visual genjutsu from Sharingan wielders (
I've tried my best to regroup Gai's best feats and the best statements in regard of his general value as a ninja. Hope my work helps people to understand how powerful he is.
Gai is the most skilled and powerful taijutsu figher in the series. His physical capabilities, either speed, strength and stamina, are over the roof already in base, and become completely out of the reach even for almost all S-ranked/kage level characters. He is simply too fast, with his speed can casually dodge almost every attack and blitz almost every opponent, and his taijutsu moves are more powerful than most of ninjutsu; he showed to be able to fight against the strongest characters, with taijutsu skill or power and speed, depending of what needed: he is one dimensional in the sense that he uses only taijutsu, yes, but his taijutsu and his physical parameters are so good that it isn't something bad, at all. His general portrayal is clearly the one of the key-players in the War Arc. Far better than any of the Gokage and any Akatsuki member bar Nagato/Pain, Obito and Itachi, able to defeat Itachi and even Pain, able to fight equally against Obito. With Gates is one of the strongest character in the series, no contest, on par if not even better than people like Minato, Tobirama, Nagato, Kakashi, Obito and so on, as clearly showed by feats and supported by portrayal. Against people like Hashirama or EMS Madara, he is overwhelmed but still able to hold his own, and if he opens the 8th Gate he would pummel them with the utmost ease. Unleashing all his power with the 8th Gate, albeit at cost of his own life, Gai is able to fight against the absolute strongest characters in the series, Kaguya, Juubi jinchuuriki Madara, DMS Rikudo Kakashi, Rikudo Senjutsu Naruto, Rinnegan Sasuke, Juubi jinchuriki Obito, Toneri, Momoshiki, and so on. He can literally trash Momoshiki, Toneri and Juubi Obito, and he could definitely defeat Sasuke and Madara, depending on how the battle plays out. The Green Beast is one of the best character in the series, and one of the most powerful. Youth power!

Still Kakashi managed to understand Deva's powers and to trick twice both the bodies, without even using his Kamui, that would probably have earned him the win.

), Kamui is just too hax even with "only" the left eye mastery; his base skills are some of the best in the series, he is a great speedster and a master of CQC who can freely wield Raiton and add Sharingan precognition and genjutsu and his top notch tricks and feints, not to mention his unrivalled battle smartness and his general ninjutsu versatilty and skill; his general portrayal is clearly the one of the key-players in the War Arc. Far better than any of the Gokage and any Akatsuki member bar Nagato/Pain, Obito and Itachi, able to defeat Itachi and even Pain with his War Arc feats, able to fight equally against Obito, even outperforming him. War Arc Kakashi with 1 Sharingan/MS is one of the strongest character in the series, no contest, on par if not even better than people like Minato, Tobirama, Nagato and so on, as clearly showed by feats and supported by portrayal. Kakashi is that strong... and Gai is portrayed as his rival and equal. The Masters are really some of the Greatest Konoha shinobi of all times, yeah.

His speed, reflexes and physical strength are over the roof even in base, obviously he is not as fast and powerful as he is with Gates, not to mention the special taijutsu moves he can use with the Gates. With lower Gates, he can use Omote Renge and Ura Renge with the best possible proficiency. With 6th Gate he becomes able to use Asa Kujaku, with 7th Gate he can unleash Hiru Tora, after opening the 8th Gate he can use Sekizo and Ya Gai. And with the skill and strength showed when using his nunchaku Soshuga in base mode, imagine how powerful would he be wielding them while in 7th Gate state. It's really important to remember that even if Gates opening are the same, different people have different level of strength. 5th Gate Rock Lee is not as powerful as 5th Gate Gai because at the start Gai is much powerful than Rock Lee and his mastery of the Gates enhancement is much better. For example, Rock Lee with Gates had trouble to defeat Gaara's sand; base Gai could casually outspeed it and slap away with just a flick of his wrist. With 8th Gate, Dai, Gai's fater, was only able to fend off the Seven Swordsmen, elite jonin level shinobi, killing some of them. Adult Gai in base is already much stronger than Dai was with 8th Gate, hence with 8th Gate he becomes tens and tens of times more powerful than the combined Gokage, able to overwhelm and nearly defeat Juubi jinchuriki Madara.

So Kisame surviving Hiru Tora it's only logical because Gai didn't want to kill him in first place; he just stated that Hiru Tora was a one-hit-kill jutsu that was far more powerful than Asa Kujaku (that already killed Kisame; a clone of Kisame with 30% of the original's chakra but same strength, speed, durability and what not), and yet he wasn't even slightly surprised when Kisame was alive after being struck by it, while Gai canonically shows great surprise when an opponent is able to survive his blows, as he showed when Juubi jinchuriki Madara was able to tank his Sekizo; when Kisame was still alive after Hiru Tora, he wasn't surprised at all; because he didn't want to kill him. Also, Hiru Tora is made of air pressure and that time was used underwater, so its power was logically under his normal standard because of that; it also had to pass through Kisame's Daikodan, defeating it, before reaching Kisame, so its power dropped down furtherly; it still was enough to defeat and KO Kisame allowing Gai to easily capture him as he wanted.

I've tried my best to regroup Gai's best feats and the best statements in regard of his general value as a ninja. Hope my work helps people to understand how powerful he is.
Gai is the most skilled and powerful taijutsu figher in the series. His physical capabilities, either speed, strength and stamina, are over the roof already in base, and become completely out of the reach even for almost all S-ranked/kage level characters. He is simply too fast, with his speed can casually dodge almost every attack and blitz almost every opponent, and his taijutsu moves are more powerful than most of ninjutsu; he showed to be able to fight against the strongest characters, with taijutsu skill or power and speed, depending of what needed: he is one dimensional in the sense that he uses only taijutsu, yes, but his taijutsu and his physical parameters are so good that it isn't something bad, at all. His general portrayal is clearly the one of the key-players in the War Arc. Far better than any of the Gokage and any Akatsuki member bar Nagato/Pain, Obito and Itachi, able to defeat Itachi and even Pain, able to fight equally against Obito. With Gates is one of the strongest character in the series, no contest, on par if not even better than people like Minato, Tobirama, Nagato, Kakashi, Obito and so on, as clearly showed by feats and supported by portrayal. Against people like Hashirama or EMS Madara, he is overwhelmed but still able to hold his own, and if he opens the 8th Gate he would pummel them with the utmost ease. Unleashing all his power with the 8th Gate, albeit at cost of his own life, Gai is able to fight against the absolute strongest characters in the series, Kaguya, Juubi jinchuuriki Madara, DMS Rikudo Kakashi, Rikudo Senjutsu Naruto, Rinnegan Sasuke, Juubi jinchuriki Obito, Toneri, Momoshiki, and so on. He can literally trash Momoshiki, Toneri and Juubi Obito, and he could definitely defeat Sasuke and Madara, depending on how the battle plays out. The Green Beast is one of the best character in the series, and one of the most powerful. Youth power!
