I'm Pretty sure he copied the gates Lee opened during the chuunin exam because he used sharingan under Lee's fight at some point. ( If I remember correctly )
When Kakashi Trained ( Rock climbing with one hand ) He Opened the 1 gate ( Manga chapter 93 page 8-9 ) And i always thought that was from Copying Lee.

And The 8 gates isn't really Taijutsu is it? It's more like a power up. I can't be sure Narutopedia says Kinjutsu but that just means it's forbidden

it seems u dont know that when somebody opens the 8th gates they died when they r done using it, after all its the gate of death if im not wrong so it makes sense for the person to die

Just because the sharingan can copy it it doesnt mean he can use it, kakashi has to be physically capable of opening the gates, thats why its specifically for taijutsu users. Kakashi is very good at taijutsu but guy and even rock lee is stronger than him in it.
