MONROE, Mich. (AP) — A southeast Michigan public school teacher has been removed from the classroom while district officials look into whether a lesson plan on African-American history and racial segregation laws was inappropriate.

Alan Barron was placed on paid leave nearly two weeks ago after an eighth-grade history class at Monroe Middle School was shown a video of how white entertainers once used black face paint to imitate blacks, according to The Monroe News ( ).

An assistant principal sat in on the history class as Barron, 59, discussed Jim Crow laws and showed the video.

"Mr. Barron has been on leave ... while we look into a reported situation in his classroom," the district said this week in a statement. "Because this is a personnel matter that is going through the teacher-contract required steps, we cannot comment any further."

Barron also is supervisor of Monroe Township, about 35 miles southwest of Detroit. The Associated Press left a message seeking comment Saturday at a phone number listed for Barron, who is expected to retire this year after 36 years in the district.

As part of his suspension, Barron can't attend an annual banquet for retiring teachers or other district functions.

Adrienne Aaron, whose daughter is in Barron's class, said he simply was teaching history and that racial segregation is a subject that should be discussed with students.

"It had nothing to do with racism. History is history," Aaron told the newspaper. "We need to educate our kids to see how far we've come in America. How is that racism?

"It's so sad this has happened to him. He's one of the best teachers we've had."

Sounds like something none of the african american students would want to see. With great stupidity comes great punishment!
History is history. Don't avoid teaching something because some people may not like hearing about it. Regardless of whether or not they don't like to hear about it, it is history(and an important part of history in regards to the U.S.) and should be taught in schools so that the future doesn't end up having laws similar to that of the jim crow laws.

Stupid moralists. He is simply doing his job. It's history, it happened. It's bad? Yes, yes it is. A terrible mistake from our past. But people must learn our past, to increase their knowledge and also to avoid making the same mistakes.

What should we do now? Start to pretend that nothing bad happened? That we always lived in a wonderful world full of fun and candies and unicorns? Beat it.

It's about time this blind moralism ended. These people don't help end prejudice. They only make things worse with their dramatic, non-planned, overreactive and stupid actions like this.

And you think Jewish people wanna re-hear about the Holocaust? History is history, just because some people are sensitive doesn't mean we shouldn't teach everyone the things that happened.

It doesn't matter if it's something the students want to see or not. History is history, and this was a stupid reaction from whoever his boss is. Whoever suspended him is a jackass.

if we don't remember our mistakes from the past, how will we know not to repeat them?

Liberals, overly sensitive society, political correctness, etc
i'm a liberal, i think everyone should learn these subjects. it will probably help tremendously with solving racism.
