Over the course of his life in the wild, Max has become a hardened survivor. He doesn’t hesitate to fight anyone he needs to in order to survive, though he doesn’t kill unless he absolutely has to, as seen when he left Furiosa and the Five Wives alive. As Max himself puts it, he exists as a man with a single instinct: Survive. Because of this, along with his insanity corroding most of his humanity, Max is a gritty loner. He often avoids interacting with and spending time with others. Even when in groups, he is often seen standing alone, either alone or grunting and muttering to himself. Max’s isolation even led to a period of time where he hadn’t spoken in years, causing his voice to become raspy and inconsistent, often coming out as a mish-mosh of accents and tones all at once. Due to his desire to be alone, Max doesn’t speak much. As such, he communicates in a series of sentence fragment, grunts, and one-word answers, best shown when he snapped his fingers at the Five Wives as an attempt to tell them what to do.
Despite his gruff demeanor and strong desire to be alone, Max often ends up intertwined in other people’s problems. While he always attempts to get out of having to help people, he somehow always ends up doing so. Throughout most of these encounters of protecting and helping others, Max regains a piece of humanity each time. While he starts off distant and abrasive, he ends up feeling a sense of attachment to the people he’s protecting. This usually causes him to leave and start the cycle over again, returning to isolation in order to prevent himself from reliving the pain of losing people he cares about again. While emotionally closed off, Max is truly honorable and caring at heart, he simply has a hard time embracing that side of him.

Max is a relatively short man, standing at about 5’9, but with a very muscular build, credited in part to his Gyojin heritage and in part to the harsh living conditions he’s had to endure and the toning of his body as a result. His hair changes styles over the years. While with his family, it was combed and simple, and got wilder after their deaths, eventually growing out into full locks as he wandered the world. His head was shaven back down after being kidnapped by the War Boys. Over a simple tank top, Max wears a brown, long-sleeved T-shirt. Over that shirt, he wears a leather jacket unique to him. While the jacket once had padding on both shoulders and long sleeves, the sleeve and the padding on his left arm and shoulder respectively were torn off during his time in the wild. His clothing, including blue pants that were stained brown-black, are dirty and tattered. Due to Max’s unstable nature, he never bothered to change his clothing to fresh ones. Max’s jacket is equipped with a large bag on his back filled with tools, food, and scrolls, though it doesn’t hinder his movement whatsoever. On his left leg, he wears a brace he fashioned himself out of metal and leather that he wore after badly damaging it. Though his leg has made a complete recovery, he still wears the worn-out brace, which also doesn’t hinder his movement. Around his neck he wears a thick black scarf.
Max’s body is riddled with scars and Fuuinjutsu seals. Max’s dominate two traits are his survival instincts and his insanity. After his wife and child died, Max began to wander the world alone, the grief of losing his loved ones driving him to isolation. After failing to protect many of the people he came across, and his own harsh actions and tribulations he had to endure, Max’s mind broke into insanity, hence his title of “Mad” Max. He regularly experiences random flashbacks of the people he once vowed to protect, but failed. The flashbacks take the form of hallucinations, usually screaming at him for letting them die. His most re-occuring hallucination is that of a little girl with brown frizzy hair. This girl is a mash-up of Max’s wife and child, a fractured memory of what he once lost, that constantly asks him how he is doing and where he was. The most powerful voice, however, is that of his son, whom he hears referring to him as “Pop.” It is this voice that often compels him to perform his sympathetic actions. ● ○ Background Information
Max was born in Kirigakure during the era of the Bloody Mist. As any with a special ability were deemed dangerous and were to be hunted down, Max was moved from Kirigakure at an early age and he lived up until his mid 20s in a city near the edge of the Water Country. In this city, Max became a member of the police force, rising quickly in the ranks and becoming a respected member amongst his comrades. However, upon the start of the third Ninja War, the city was heavily affected, being all but destroyed and depleted of its resources. As the residents grew more desperate, and violent, gangs formed throughout and in neighboring lands. One such gang ended up killing Max’s wife and child. The grief of losing his family drove Max to the breaking point, causing him to hunt down the people that killed his family, slaughtering all of them. In doing so, Max ended up revealing his Gyojin heritage. Knowing that in such desperate times people would happily sell Max out for bounty money, Max fled the Water Country, wandering aimlessly for the next decade. And slowly becoming more and more Mad.
After protecting the innocent from a vicious gang in the Fire Country and a gladiator-style battle royale called Thunderdome in the Lightning Country, Max found himself in the Wind Country amidst its many deserts. By this time, the amount of people Max failed, as well as the built-up grief he sustained resulted in his sanity being shattered, plummeting him fully into the title of “Mad Max” and isolation. While alone, Max was ambushed by yet another gang and despite his best efforts to fight them off, ended up captured and taken back to their base, a makeshift city called the Citadel. It is here Max learned that the Citadel was a giant aquifier, with its leader in control because he had access to water, a commodity in the barren wasteland of the deserts. Used as a “blood bag” due to being universal donor, Max spent months enslaved by the gang, known as War Boys, who worked for the dictator in charge of the Citadel, Immortan Joe. After months of being used as a blood bag, Max suddenly found himself removed from his cage and chained, taken outside of the cave he was trapped in. Max would later find out he was being used as a blood bag in a convoy aimed to recapturing a group of women who fled, known as the Five Wives(known as Joker, Berry, Ian, LC, and Penguin), enslaved by Immortan Joe to be used as breeders to give himself the perfect son, and the perfect heir. As a sandstorm struck, encompassing the convoy holding Max captive, the Five Wives, and their liberator, and betraying officer of Joe’s known as Imperator Furiosa, Max was able to escape. In typical Max fashion, despite his initial opposition, he helps the women escape, kill Joe, and regroup back to the Citadel. As the Wives and Furiosa ascended to become the new rulers of the Citadel, Max snuck away, leaving, but not before he exchanged one last look of acknowledgement and understanding with Furiosa and the Wives.
