A masked man who reportedly fired shots in a cinema complex in western Germany has been shot dead by police, the state's interior minister has said.
Peter Beuth told the state of Hessen's parliament that police stormed the Kinopolis complex in Viernheim, near Frankfurt, after shots were reported.
"The police thought that the gunman was holding hostages and because of that he was shot dead," he added.
Mr Beuth said no-one else had been hurt.
However, reports said some Heavily armed police surrounded the complex after the incident began on Thursday afternoon.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper said it was unclear if there was a political or ideological motive, or if it was an attempted robbery.
Mr Beuth also said: "The police had an emergency call at 2:45pm [12:45 GMT]. The caller said there was a masked man... armed with a long gun. It is unclear whether it was a real gun.
"The caller heard four shots and said that the masked man appeared a little mentally unstable. Police special forces were called."
people were suffering the effects of tear gas released as police stormed the complex.

Going by this statement that no one got shot, "Mr Beuth said no-one else had been hurt."

So he fired shots into a cinema, thankfully didn't kill anyone, and then the police officers killed him on the basis of 'him holding hostages?'

Couldn't they just kill him because you know ... he tried to murder people? I hope I'm missing something here. Anyway there really needs to be a mental health test for owning a gun. It should be given periodically like a drivers license.

I don't even understand how that works. They need to make sure your physically capable of driving every few years, but they don't want to make sure that people are in a healthy mental state when owning fire arms? Yeah, okay.

Europe already has some of the toughest gunlaws as it is, all guns aren't purchased legally people are buying ghost guns that are made out side of corporations untraceable from the black market.

This ^^ and even if it's not from an outside untraceable corporation, that haven't stopped people from buying guns from some out the trunk gun dealer on the streets
