TOWN OF NEWBURGH – A US Marine stationed at the Stewart Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport is credited with capturing a man who had just stolen two money bags from the Neptune Diner on Route 17K in the Town of Newburgh at noon on Sunday.
Staff Sgt. Michael Forras chased the suspect, John Knaggs, 27, of Cornwall, and arrested him.
Town Police said Knaggs entered the diner, began talking with the owner about a credit card transaction, and as she stepped away to seat patrons, Knaggs reached over the counter, grabbed two money bags and fled.
The owner and a patron, Charles Smith of New Windsor, pursued Knaggs in a foot chase and as they crossed Route 17K, they ran across the path of a vehicle driven by Staff Sgt. Forras.
Forras, who was in his military uniform, turned around, got out of his vehicle, chased Knaggs, and reached him near the Howard Johnson’s Motel.
He caught up with Knaggs, identified himself as a Marine and took Knaggs into custody.
Town of Newburgh Police were assisted by the State Police patrol, K-9 and aviation unit during the incident.
Knaggs was charged with grand larceny and police said other charged may be filed
