I was wondering, the sharingan is progressed to the Mangekyo Sharingan through the emotional trauma of killing a close friend or family member, that the wielder cares deeply for. Sasuke killed his brother Itachi, but didn't unlock the MS until he was informed of Itachi's good nature, and unfaltering love for Sasuke.
So What I was wondering is, could the Mangekyo sharingan be activated if, let's say an Uchiha is placed under a genjutsu powerful enough for the Uchiha to not see through it with his sharingan, and in the illusion is forced to kill a friend or relative. In that moment, the Uchiha would feel the same emotions, believing it to be real. Could this cause him/her to progress to the MS, whilst under the genjutsu, and when the genjutsu is released, the Uchiha could return to the reality, in which his family and friends are fine, and yet he has awakened the MS, and able to use it freely?

Interesting theory.

I'd say it's plausible, because the brain is still undergoing those emotions. Remember when Hebi Sasuke fought Itachi, and after he broke Tsukuyomi he put his hand over his eye?

I'm talking theoretically, I'm writing a fan fiction, and this might play a big part in it :)

That's what I thought, it's just finding a genjutsu user powerful enough for Uchiha's to not be able to see through it

Yeah Just brainstorming for a fan fic :) I figured this was the best place to find answers to questions

I thought of it too. Well maybe Mad at had tried that but it wouldn't probably work out like that.

The kurama clan had the most powerful genjutsu and can be able to affect the victims in the real world.

Like the movie inception and matrix, it probably best fit the kurama clans gentjutsu. Whatever happens to the person on the dream world can happen to the real world. Like saito being shot or when neo got beat up by anderson.

It can happen as long as the genjutsu is powerful enough to reach the reality part.

I would worry that that might cause deep psychological trauma.

Actually, your thesis has been disproved by Itachis first usage of Tsukuyomi against Sasuke in part 1. Anyway, the reason why Sasuke didn't awake the Mangekyō right after Itachis death is simple~

Sasuke wasn't traumatised at first. After Obito told Sasuke that Itachi loved him deeply the whole time, did anything to protect him and died for him, it awoke also Sasukes lost feelings for his brother. The truth about Itachi, Konoha and Sasukes own memories as he was a child, were the important trigger for the Mangekyō Sharingan.
