If I remember correctly, in Japanese, his hair color is referred to as "chapatsu", aka "tea-colored". So basically reddish-brown, or auburn.

Yes, I know this isn't viz but it's also the exact same translation the English dub uses.

So either

A. Gaaras hair was never red

B. Anko is color blind

My mind has been blown.

stuff was changed...like at the part with Naruto training with Jiraiya...Naruto described his normal chakra as Yellow and Kyuubi's a red.

but blue is a more heroic color so it was changed.
