Manga vs Comics: Which Are Better?

Truthfully, Manga and Comic Books are more or less equal, while being completely different. Depending on what you prefer, one might be better than the other.

-Manga-

Advantages:

- Releases weekly, on average
- Has a definitive story, that at some point will end
- Publisher is focused on one story, so it get more attention and detail
- Depending on what you use, free to read

Disadvantages:

- No color, black and white on average
- Usually made in Japan, so some things are lost in translation
- Must read right-to-left
- At least 2 or 3 times shorter than comics


-Comics-

Advantages:

- Printed in full color
- Each release is usually double-triple the size of manga release
- Characters are much more popular and mainstream
- Read from left-to-right, the American standard.
- Stories can be much more epic due to increased issue sizes and color

Disadvantages:

- Released every month as opposed to every week.
- Stories never have a definitive ending, meaning there is no true climax to the story
- Must pay to read
- Writers are usually working on more than one project, so attention to the full story might be lost
- Filled to the brim with unneeded advertisements

Comic book characters in my opinion tend to go the "skin" route.

Although I am digging the new 52, I find most characters and their development to be stalled for the purpose of a person being able to visualize themselves as that character. The story (even when it moves forward) is halted for the sake of keeping readers entranced with the scale and world building.

Manga tends to put a lot of effort into the story and the competitive nature of that industry really pushes readers and writers to new heights. I find definitive endings and full climaxes to be much more entertaining in the long run than just putting a character on as a skin.

All time favourite characters from all comics and mangas.

Manga tends to have a more original art style, which I enjoy very much. And if you buy the viz volumes, you're not going to have any translation problems.

I prefer anime over manga and comics. Most of the "disadvantages" with manga are lost when it's turned into anime. Sometimes the story suffers, but that's few and far in between.

Whilst some comics can be beautiful (seriously check out Young Avengers) they're paper thin and inconsistent.

The subject matter is more interesting and diverse in manga, the Japanese have different attitudes to comics than we do.

Manga provides some incredibly intriguing and different views of angles and free-forming artwork, but comics still reign supreme in my opinion in this field.

Mangas are specifically written for the possibility of animation adaptions which is awesome in some ways, and a little shackling in others. While mangas work to make sure each panel can be turned into something else, comics are mostly just focused in making sure that art can tell the story. Plus colour! _@:

I agree. Manga is all about the story, while comics have a lot more stake in the imagery. Which I'm cool with, too.

Didn't read issues cover to cover, but a vintage store of mine had his first "Showcase" replicas on display. Read a lot of them until the sad "death" issue. Glad he's back!!!

New 52 is not excellent in all areas. but it's well done.

I would suggest picking up some of it.
