It really depends on the type of series.

For just about any big Shounen action series, obviously the manga is superior. The manga is the original and usually the originals execute the story best, and of course no filler to bother with either. When it comes to those type of stories, pacing also feels a lot more natural with manga where you can go as you please, while anime feels a lot laggier even if the pacing isn't badly executed. Main reason why I ultimately preferred Fullmetal Alchemist's manga over Brotherhood.

But there are others where the anime is superior as well. Obviously the ones where the anime is original they tend to be better, but particularly with mecha series. Gurren Lagann and Eureka Seven were easily better as anime than their manga, and I'm sure that's probably true with Code Geass as well. A lot of mechas start off as anime, and it's usually for the better. A manga can't really replicate mecha style battles with their explosive style and space combat execution, especially compared to an anime that has movement, color, and even a soundtrack to accompany it all.

It's really dependent on the type of series. I've gone through more manga overall though just because it's a lot faster.
