In most of the anime's I have watched, there is always side characters that are way more interesting to me than the main character of the story. The only anime where I haven't experienced this is DBZ because Goku is just awesome.
Examples of this is the following:
- Naruto - Here characters like Hashirama, Madara, Tobirama, Hiruzen, Minato, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Itachi, A and killer Bee come to mind as well as Kakashi's Dad. They are way cooler than Naruto and Sasuke from the moment they were introduced. And they are powerful as well.
- One Piece - Here you have to look at Shanks, Rayleigh, the Admirals, The Shichibukai, Gol D Roger, Whitebeard, Garp and Zoro. They are just awesome and are much more fascinating than Luffy.
- Bleach - Although Ichigo is reallycool, characters like Yamamoto, Kyuraku, Ukitake, Zaraki, Unohana and of course the great Urahara are all characters that I would like to see more of and see what power the actually possess.
- Magi - I am currently busy whatching this, but here Sinbad and his 8 generals are really amazing.
And so I can mention alot more anime's that have this trend. I know that these other characters are introduced for various reasons, but why must they always be such awesome and badass characters that always seem more likeable than the main character.
Why not make the main character the most awesome character. I know that the main character always becomes the most powerful person and so forth, but by then I do not actually care about him/her/them anymore. And then with some crazy ass move they overshadow these once monster characters as they were nothing.
Sometimes I wish that we can just see more about these other characters that are introduced in anime's. A good example would be Hiruzen in Naruto. He gets praised as this strong character, but nothing is shown to prove this.
I will just have to wait and see if all the great characters that I like will be shown more of and actually show some of their hype that was mentioned.
