Madara is a powerhouse. Sure. But the gap between him and the current Kage is too wide. Hashirama was considered Kage level was he not?
So what I'm led to believe is that Hashirama was born to rival the power of the strongest Uchiha.
From what we've seen. Madara has imense power none of us has seen thus far.
Hashirama fought toe-to-toe with this guy.
There's talk of Madara only fighting to gain Hashirama's DNA.
Madara is smarter than to toy with Hashirama for that meant playing with his own life.
I personally felt he gave that fight his all and was proven, like he is proving to the current Kage.. That everything had been futile. Madara lost not because he wasn't the strongest.. But because he lacked the prerequisites to win. What was he fighting for?

He was fighting for Senju DNA. When he has both Senju and Uchiha DNA his power get's greater. He becomes closer to Sage of Six Paths by combining the two halfs (the elder and younger brother's DNA).

Sage's son their ancestors are good example. big bro ( uchiha ancestor with eyes wanted war and rule everything ) lil bro ( senju dude) with body spirit thing and strong chakra wanted peace) then sage chosed lil bro to hes follower and big bro got mad they fought.. ^ uchiha vs senju ^ madara vs hashirama uchiha vs senju again, naruto vs sausage uchiha vs senju once again.. they fight for power and control. senju side = peace uchiha side = war power. those clans are destined to fight eachother lol.
