Someone has probably already made a thread about this, but here's my prediction.
Madara is not the bad guy. Since his edo tensei he's been doing everything he has to help the shinobi alliance, not by defeating the real antagonist ( Obito ) but by growing and strengthing the characters in the process. He's been doing what he has to start the peace. A common enemy and a threat to the shinobi world was the only way to begin to unite the Nations, and a fight with the Kages, the leaders of the nations, was the only way to truly unite the leaders. The way they united and cooperated , receiving a bond only available through watching each other's backs, truly brought them togeather. Madara was the only shinobi strong enough to do that. Once united with Obito he pratically does nothing, almost appearing bored. In my opinion he basically could have ended it all at that time if he wanted to. Once Hashirama arrives he basically keeps him occupied. away from the real threat, until the final stages of the infinate tsukuyomi plan surfaces. Hashirama was the trump-card at the time, the biggest help to the allaince, and if he would have done all the work he would have been a crutch they just leaned on. I don't remember the panel or the chapter, but Madara appears threated when it all starts to pull through. If it was his plan, why would he be so eager to stop it from happening? Why would he appear threatend and shocked when it actually started working? Theres more I have to say about it, but my theory in short - SO6P Eldest son ( Uchiha ) believed that power was the true way to bring peace. Madara has been doing everything he has been doing for the good of the shinobi world, using his power to fully unite the Shinobi world thus fufilling what the first Uchiha could not do, and finally cleansing the cursed Uchiha name.
