LOL Madara did not rival hashirma his whole life. The manga actually shows evidence that Hashirama owned Madara most of the time. Remember when the Uchiha and senju had their truth. Madara was all beat up laying on the ground at Hashi's mercy. His brother got beat up by tobirama. And Hashirama didn't look like he even broke a sweat. He spared Madara Uchiha. Then Madara had to use the 9 tails to even compete with Hashirama and still lost miserably. I mean he's a sharingan user who got caught in a ginjutsu that's just pathetic. Then he had to steal his cells and even that wasn't enough. Nothing suggest that Madara was on Hashiramas level but Hashirama was always leagues ahead.
