Regardless if he was trying or not, Gai hasn't killed him or mortally wounded him where he couldn't fight again. Meanwhile Gai is on a time limit of how long he can maintain that form.

I see you are not looking at it right. Tanking like it's nothing the guy is bleeding and bruised. And in the last page of the chapter he is drooling blood and his headpiece is broken. Plus when Gai threw the first attack Madara said 405 more hits and this may be bad showing fear of Gai. Plus if he enjoys the pain why does he have a concerned/suprisied look on the first one and why doesn't he think the pain feels incredible or something of the sort when he gets pummeled around the second time and why does he defend himself when Gai goes for the last Evening Elephant hit. Gai is doing legit damage. And Madara is exicted because there is someone powerful to fight with.
