After analyzing all facts about these two, I am now certain that Madara was NEVER equal to Hashirama.
1. The only reason they fought evenly in the Valley of the End was because Madara controlled a Kyuubi. And even with Kyuubi, he lost.
Some, of course, might argue that Kyuubi was part of Madara's power, but I think it's a far call.
2. Now Edo Madara is fighting evenly against Edo Hashirama. But, Hashirama was revived exactly as he was when he died. Edo Madara, on the other hand, is stronger than he was at any point in his life.
Hence, it seems obvious Madara was actually never equal in power to Hashirama.
