I do believe that the reason why Madara did all he did was because he wanted to become the ultimate Shinobi, so to surpass SO6P himself. Like Itachi said, Madara had too much power, that he became arrogant and looked everybody as inferior to him. Like i explain
I think Madara somehow managed to know the life of SO6P and was seeking for a similar power. It's how he knew that originally, Senju and Uchihas were just one, in the person of SO6P. Like Tobi(refering himself as Madara) explained SO6P devided his power into the elder and younger brother of SO6P. And like Tobi explained, Madara and Hashirama were both direct descendant of the elder and brother. So the most powerful in their respectiv clan. Madara himself was already probably around the power of the elder if not stronger. And i believe that Hashirama was also around the power of the younger if not stronger. So Madara knowing this, obviously wanted to fight the strongest descendant of the younger, so that he gained the strongest DNA possible in order to become more ultimate. I think it's the reason why he fought Hashirama, to combine both powers(like SO6P)
He also knew that SO6P became the Jinchuriki of the Juubi. It's why he wanted to complete his plan. Notice that when he notice Tobi started the moon eye plan before capturing Kyubi and Hachibi, he didn't like it at all. Why did he had this reaction if the only thing behind the moon eye plan is to controlling people with his tsukuyomi? With the Juubi revived, even incomplete, he should be able to do so like Obito said. But he still wants to capture them. It's simply because he really wants to recreate the Juubi in complete form, to become the strongest possible
