Well he needed a Rinne-Sharingan and Sasuke had it. Being an incomplete Juubi Jinchuriki in a matter of speaking would have given him a six-tome, which is no more better than Sasuke's--so that does make perfect sense. But as far as "failed" I think he just chose Kakashi as the easier target and a way to get to Obito who was paralyzed and even easier than that.

I wouldn't say "failed" as much as "altering to taking a better and wiser route"

Well, part of it had to do with Sasuke having Straight Commas much like Madara's Eyes had, but I'm not sure why Madara would want Sasuke's Rinnegan considering they're not his, meaning he'd be an inferior user of his Rinnegan.

Sasuke does not have a RinneSharingan. Madara only went for Sasuke's Rinnegan because it was easier to access at the moment. He would have eventually gotten his own Rinnegan as to be able to use their full power.

He was even able to kill Senju's as kid without Sharingan.
