If anything, I'd have to say that Tobirama Senju is responsible for most of the current arc's issues. How so? Allow me to explain. Now Madara, although he was arrogant, he was a pretty sane guy as a kid. Like Hashirama, he was tired of the constant wars. During Hashirama's flashback, Madara stated that he had four brothers including Izuna. However, because of the constant battles, he lost three of them, only leaving him and Izuna. That led to Madara being overprotective of him. Madara didn't begin to snap until Tobirama killed Izuna during battle. Izuna died telling Madara not to listen to the Senju's lies.
Noting that, Madara had no intentions on listening to Hashirama due to his brother's death. The only way he would is if Hashirama killed himself or Tobirama to understand Madara's pain. Once Hashirama intended on killing himself, was when Madara formed a truce. Now realise, everything was going fine with the truce until the decision to choose a Hokage. Hashirama suggested that Madara be made Hokage, however Tobirama felt that Madara can't be trusted and said that the people should choose, knowing Madara wouldn't be chosen. When Madara overheard this, THAT was when he snapped and betrayed the village, KNOWING that Tobirama would be appointed after Hashirama and would use his power to subjugate the Uchiha clan. And Tobirama did just that.
Had Tobirama not killed Izuna, disregard Hashirama's wishes to make Madara Hokage, or use his power to subjugate the Uchiha, Madara would have never went haywire and defect from the village. Thus avoiding ALL of the manga's issues.
I apologise for the long post, but please take the time to read it, as I feel that it needs to be said.
