The main reason why Madara wanted Hashirama sage mode because he wanted to use his buddha wood art as his weapon.Picture Madara perfect susano wrap around the budha statue and each of the 1000 hands have a perfect susano sword which can shatter all matter with one swing.Madara will be very difficult to take down but the only weakness he may have is the statue speed/mobility .

If Madara get hashirama sage mode ,he will not need to be worry about his Susano size being small because the senjutsu will give him a chakra boost to make his susano size bigger
