Madara has a trump card. What is it? My guess is it's Rinnegan. How so? It controls the Juubi. He has two Rinnegan and Obito has one. Therefore, I guess that Madara can control the Juubi better than Obito. He wants to fight Hashirama cleanly and fairly.
Why, to defeat Hashirama? For revenge? For hatred? Was it for war, or for peace? To create a dream world or to give the Shinobi world another chance to see the error of its ways? I don't think any of those are the answer. Madara is doing all of this simply because he felt like it. He saw power, and he wanted it. Madara is the ultimate alpha male, he gets a good idea and he acts on it with his own power. He is not bothered by failure or even by death. He is truly comfortable being himself, even if the world thinks he is an evil ****.
I think he will step in to save the world from Obito, partially to admit that he was wrong to be bitter that Hashirama won and also to prove his own great strength. In dying, he will prove to his ultimate rival Hashirama that he did something that even he could never do -- awaken Rinnegan, be the strongest and save the world as a true hero -- the yin to his yang. A man that lived in the shadows and brought greatness to the world merely through acting on his own desires.
