This is not true. If you re-read the chapters, you'll remember that Zetsu tells Obito, "He apparently transplanted the eyes into the boy in a way that he didn't notice."

So that means that Madara traveled to the hidden rain and transplanted the eyes soon after awakening them, without the help of Zetsu. Not only that, but he was able to make the journey back, without eyes, and even killed a fodder uchiha along the way to restore partial vision. Now it is possible that he had the eye beforehand, but its clear that he did all this without the help of Zestu. Only after he returned from his journey did he hook himself up to the Mazou and create Zetsu clones.

Madara had been reduced to using the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path as a life support system when he met obito.

Now madara did not gain the rinnegan until shortly before his "death"

He went on to explain to obito he had awakened the Rinnegan, gained access to the empty shell of the Ten-Tails(Gedo Mazou) by releasing a seal on the moon he then went on to cultivate Hashirama's cells into clones.

This proves he was not confined to the cave before he transplanted his eyes.
Because he was being kept alive through his IV like connection to the Mazou.


I am entirely certain the "death" was not an actual passing but the event in which he was forced to link up with the shell of the juubi or face certain death.When obito remarks about being a shell of his former self he was talking about madara being on a make shift bypass machine.

White Zetsu wasn't created until after Madara found Obito and Black Zetsu didn't even exist until after Madara died.
