It's hard to say that Madara was indeed defeated by Hashirama in the valley of end fight Reasons why are :
1-Madara's goal wasn't to defeat Hashirama but it was to steal portion of his DNA....now you should realize that its the goal that determines the course of the fight!!!....for Madara it didn't matter if he lost...becuz his mission priority was to steal portion of hashirama's cells..
2-Madara deliberatly faked his Death and defeat...he wanted to make hashirama and the world believe he was defeated and dead , so he can start working secretly on his project Mugen Tsukoyomi...in other words Madara's defeat was a necessary stage for awakening the Rinnegan ,thus, activating the Moon eye plan....and Like Mastermind Tobidara says:"For the world Uchiha Madara was bested by Hashirama, but is the Legend true?...TRUE WINNER IS HE WHO CHOSE TO FOCUS ON THE FUTUR"!!!.....btw i salute Tobidara for this wise badass words!..
3-now lets be Logic : you should understand that Madara didn't fight with his whole Sharingan powers...but why??....becuz Madara had to keep his eyes safe( although he sacrified one eye to izanagi)...i said Madara had to keep his eyes safe and in good state....that is why he avoided using forbidden or shocking dojutsus that could easily defeat hashirama....like i said it's the goal that determine the course of the fight...Madara's goal was to steal some of hashirama's powers to increase the powers of his eyes (rinnegan)....if madara used his eyes full powers that will just weaken his eyes and make his goal unreachable !...
