Madara did nothing but look out for his clans interest, and the turned their back on him, dont no many that would not turn thier back in turn... Uchiha Clan planned a coup d'etat which would've turned into a civil war... which also would've costed a lot of innocent people their lives.

Itachi stopped this, easily by wiping his clan out.

Itachi killed people that were evil, people that wanted nothing but power, people that wasn't kind.
because in the end... "one who is kind to you, but no one else... is not a kind person"
and the uchihas would've killed... a lot of innocent people that didn't wanna get ruled by the Uchiha.

Itachi in my opinion is a true hero... in a twisted way... killing ~50 guilty shinobis to save the lives of thousands of innocents... that would a good thing.
