Gai would have died right there if not for Naruto. You heard Madara. He acknowledged Gai's power in taijutsu as he has never fought anyone this powerful in that particular area.

Then he was going to kill him as thanks instead of letting the 8th gate take it's toll. Madara still would have won that fight regardless of weather he used his Rinnegan techs or not. Madara is not weak.

Gai is just that strong.
