You know, I didn't get this sense in the manga, but in today's anime episode, it seems Madara really did want Sasuke to join him and he did see Izuna in Sasuke like Hashirama did. And he lingered and watched as Sasuke passed out and left his sword there almost as if to leave Sasuke a weapon in case he was somehow revived. In a way...he showed him mercy....
