I was thinking this at first but then thought about how Madara was even able to live afterwards. Think about it, if he openly said to Hashi "It's only an illusion Hashirama. I'm not really dead" Then he would've gotten killed for sure.

In other words, the second manga scan is where he is really lying and deceiving but that runs throughout the clan since Itachi also lied and deceived his brother Sasuke during their fight. No hard feelings, I guess
