I think that he unlocked it after the fight, because he didnt die right then and there. But it was soon after.

From facts we know that Madara got Rinnegan shortly before his death, and also that he "died" at the Final Valley. So if that was his time of death then that means Madara had Rinnegan WHILE He was fightning Harashima, and didn't USE IT. Which means Madara HELD BACK which would mean mean by logic Madara>Harashima (Maybe) .

Logic: The Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan has been shown to be able to progress to the Rinnegan through unknown means. This was displayed by Madara Uchiha who noted that he was able to awaken this dōjutsu shortly before his death, which contrary to popular belief, did not occur at the battle at the Valley of the End. As to why he didnt use something like this in an "All Out Battle" .

It was said to be truth that he died at the Final Valley, but that myth was proven false by Tobi, so who knows. For all intensive purposes, he wouldn't have held back if he had the Rinnegan, because he'd have taken Hashirama's cells, and all the Tailed Beasts he had subdued at that point. Would have already completed the Moon's Eye plan as well.

Well Madara wldnt have had those things if it wasnt for Kabuto . . . ok then just bring back Hashi as an Edo . . . . oppsie Madara does not have any sealing jutsu to stop an Edo.

Yes I'm visualizing it right now in my head. You know, it doesn't always come down to has the more OP techniques. Maybe in a debate thread, but in the story, it could honestly happen. Hashi could be some how revived, and would go take on Madara 1 on 1.
