We don't know exactly when Madara died. He knew Nagato as a child, Orochimaru encountered Nagato as a child so it's very possible they were alive at the same time. Madara seems to be the kind of guy who is always wanting more and more power, so he could have contacted Orochimaru or vice versa and let Orochimaru experiment on him. Orochimaru and Madara having some sort of relationship seems to be possible to me.
