When madara fought the 5 kages he said he was the only one who was able to see through the
Woodbunshin of hashirama. Yet clearly In chapter 626 this isn't evident.

My theory is that maybe that's how Madara survived, he really did best the Justu and managed to survive.

Well maybe he used his EMS and saw what would happen, and decided to make a clone, went through that and once Hashirama left he came out of hiding.

The question becomes when did the Wood Clone come into existance
When the faced each other . . . Madara has EMS
When they charged . . .it did not look like he had it.
He did not have it when Hashi was on the ground after the charge

The question is where did Hashi make the switch

That's a great point. If Madara can see through the technique, he could have pretended to die from it. The problem is this: Why does Hashirama believe that Madara really did die? How did Madara create a fake dead body so convincing that Hashirama believed it? There are lots of ways that Madara could have dodged that final attack and survived. There are not many ways that he could have pretended to die AND make Hashirama believe it at close range.
