Madara and how he got the rinnegan?

Hi I'm new nice to meet everyone don't know if someone posted this before...
I'm also a little puzzled on how Edo Madara obtained his rinnegan did he have it already and just showed it off to the kages or the next step after perfecting the sharingan evolves it in to the rinnegan :shrug: ??? From watching the manga you can only guess but if anyone can explain it Ill gladly appreciate it.

He obtained it just before his death at the hands of the !st Hokage. The Rinnegan is the next step in the Sharingan chain. 3/3 toemo, MS, EMS, and then Rinnengan.

I thought you have to be born wit the rinnigan but guess you can can obtain it aswell just got to kill the hokage with the sharingan?
