I think it started much like that between the Path of Six Sages and his sons. Like how the Sage of Six paths chose the Older Senju brother over the younger Uchiha brother, I think the people of the hidden leaf village chose Hashirama over Madara. This thus caused Uchiha Madara to try to fight Hashirama and usurp the title of Hokage. He then tricks and lies to people like Obito and Pain who are suffering and makes them his pawns in his attempt to put everyone under Infinite Tsukoyomi and rule the world with it.

Or maybe I'm wrong and madara takes some of hashi's sperm and they get ramen afterwards...
