Well I happened to have a bit of free time so I decided to watch through Macross Plus since I had just finished Macross. The original was pretty lengthy with 36 episodes but luckily Macross Plus was only a 4-episode OVA so I was able to finish it with ease. Overall I enjoyed it a slight bit more than the original Macross, but it still had problems of its own. Said problems were very different from the original’s, however.

Macross Plus follows three individuals who used to be friends in years past. There is Isamu Dyson, a hotheaded and reckless person, Guld Goa Bowman, who contrasts significantly with Isamu as a more serious and cold character, and Myung Fang Lone, who serves as the producer for Sharon Apple, a famous virtual singer. Though these three used to be close, a dramatic incident ultimately resulted in the three separating and their reunion leads to some more emotional clashes. This along with the conflict between Isamu and Guld over the Supernova Project as well as conspiracies connected to the existence of Sharon add up to a number of problematic situations throughout the story.

The story doesn’t feel as if it has a particular aim, and for much of the OVA it seems as if the events just take place without a specific plot per say. This could be considered both a good and a bad thing, as this open-ended nature allows Plus to cover different aspects of the story without being bogged down by a limiting plot, while at the same time it prevents the series from establishing a strong story or purpose for its cast. The short time frame of this OVA limits how much it can do and the story goes by too quickly for any extreme plot twists to take place. However, some might prefer this to the comparably dragging and overextended nature of the original Macross, as Plus never feels as if it is lagging unnecessarily but rather goes a bit too quickly.

The characters are decent but, just as in the original Macross, far from amazing. Isamu is a reckless yet generally likeable character, and even though his actions are questionable at times he is probably the easiest to be attached to in Plus. Guld has his respectable moments but often seems overly aggressive and it is difficult to like him until perhaps the last episode of the OVA. Myung primarily functions as a force to drive the plot as well as a source of tension between Isamu and Guld, though there is nothing particularly bad about her character. With the short length of Plus, it is obvious that development won’t progress as much as a full-length series would allow for. However, I felt that the story unnecessarily delayed the explanation about the “incident” that took place 7 years ago. It is mentioned constantly throughout the OVA and is a clear influence on how all of the characters act, but it is never revealed what took place until the very last episode, and even then it is only briefly touched upon.

With flashier action and a much faster story, I enjoyed Macross Plus a bit more than the comparably slow Macross. However, its short length was crippling in some areas and ultimately the story and character development were lacking because of this. Just like the original Macross, I would rate Macross Plus a 7/10. It was certainly enjoyable but lacked the depth to make it stand out as a great story.

Well, the description of its premise sounds kind of interesting, but it is often more important how is pulled...

It's interesting to see how the tensions play out between the cast and I was definitely curious about learning exactly what happened between the main trio. There isn't a lot of character depth but the character interactions are treated pretty well so that's always a nice thing. Sadly 4 episodes just isn't enough to properly treat the ideas that were presented and even though it's a fun watch it's far from perfect.

One thing I immediately noticed though was that Macross Plus's production values were vastly superior to the original's. I guess that's to be expected with a decade gap between the two and OVAs tend to have much more budget to begin with but I think it's still worth pointing out that Plus's presentation is quite well done for its time, at least as far as I can tell.

I've been very tired lately, so this level of length seems appropriate for me xd I'll start with Plus xP

The good thing is that even though Plus is supposed to be a sequel to the original Macross, you don't really need the original to appreciate it. It does mention a few things that make more sense with Macross knowledge, but Plus can stand alone as its own story since the cast is entirely different. Same with Frontier, which still remains my favorite installment of the Macross series (though I guess that doesn't say much since I've still only seen 2 others).

xP I'm about to finish episode 1. So far everything seems fine. I do feel intrigued about the so-called event, but since you said it's touched till the last episode I'll try to not get eager xP I liked the seiyus work, specially when Myung and Guld met almost by the end of the episode. She was almost shouting, which was pretty effective to show just how awkward and clashy (? xP I need to read more xd) the meeting was. Dyson kind of pisses me off with that attitude of his, but I guess he's ok.
In general it seems to touch some of the most iconic topics of the sci-fi stories of the last century:
-The modelling of the human mind through digital media.
-War Technology with a high rate of development, in which we also see two teams competing to win.
-Mecha (ofc xD) and such.

Nice, yeah it leaves a lot of stuff to the end so some things might be a bit confusing. Isamu is pretty reckless and does some stupid things but he has his moments.

Funny how when I was watching Plus the first thing I thought of was Hatsune Miku with the whole Sharon thing. It's interesting just how far technology can go in but a few years. Makes you worry if Vocaloids will ever go the Plus route lol, quite a scary thought. And I liked the contrast between Isamu and Guld, definitely represented the rivalry aspect of the anime quite well. Mecha fights were pretty nice for their time and MUCH better than the original's.

Unfortunately I have not, but I've heard it was supposed to be amazing. I have it all downloaded but I just haven't found the time to watch it. I've heard that it's like an older Code Geass with a greater sense of scale though, if it is that's something I must see.

I guess they share some similarities. LOGH is a space opera so obviously the scale is going to be gigantic. Though I'd rate it higher than Code Guess. What I liked most about CG is it's great character ensemble and I personally think LOGH has better characters. I liked Yang Wenli more than Light, L, Lelouch or Dr. Tenma.

Btw, I've seen you around and you seem like a decent poster. Why don't join onepiecebay.net? It's NB's sister site dedicated to One Piece, but of course there's tons of other sections. There's not nearly as much posters as on NB but that comes with the bonus of not having any trolls or immature posters.

If you decide to join, write down "Yang Wenli" as referral name.

Yeah I've heard it's even better than Geass and many people who've seen it view it as a masterpiece. I can't be sure how much I'll enjoy it but it sure seems like a fantastic series, one of these days I definitely have to watch it.

I'll consider it, I suppose joining another forum couldn't hurt. A good community would be nice and it's always fun to find more anime/manga fans out there. Less trolls is always a good thing.

Would you happen to have a MyAnimeList by the way?
