Chapter 8
She opened her eyes when there was a bright light shining in her eyes. She had a peaceful night sleep after who knew how long. She wished she could just fall back asleep and enjoy it since she didn't know the next when she would have a peaceful night.
“You're finally awake,” Kikai said.
“Kikai!? You surprised me! What are you doing?” she asked surprisingly.
“Protecting you,” he answered. “Taki explained everything to us. We thought it would be better if we had guard shifts until you woke up. It's too dangerous for everyone to sleep at the same time.”
How was it still dangerous? Did Taki leave out the Dark Rift part? Kai should have thought they were dead. “Didn't Taki tell you that Kai thinks we're dead? We're safe for awhile,” she said happily.
“Kuroi doesn't think you're dead though! He has no contact with Kai, otherwise we would have known about him earlier!” he exclaimed. “Kai will know something is up when he realizes that the Moon is still fighting the aura around it.”
That meant she wouldn't sleep for a while if Kuroi thought they were alive. The final battle was slowly approaching, but at the same time it felt so far away. She was going to make sure that everyone would live through it! They were going to return alive! They were strong enough to win. If they stopped a Dark Rift then they could win. They had to work together though. It seemed like they never tried anything together. Instead of them both trying to save her Kodoku tried while Katei tried to stop Taki. The five of them were strong, but she couldn't imagine how strong they'd be if they would combine their magic.
“We need Kuroi. Nobody wants to admit it, but it's the truth,” she said quietly. Kuroi was stronger than all of them. He was the strongest out of their group. They could win if she could change him back to normal. She'd have the others there to help her too. They also knew who the main enemy was, unlike the last time she tried to change Kuroi.
“It's a weakness to us. It kills is to admit something we don't like. We like Kuroi, but we've been depending on him. We want to prove to ourselves that we can do things on our own,” Kikai said sadly.
She never heard that before. She only heard that Kuroi was like a father to them. Kodoku was on his own for eleven years, but how did he really feel? Was he alone for those eleven years? If he was then he was the same as her. “You already proved to yourselves that you can do things on your own,” she said happily. “Kodoku was working against Kuroi for eleven years. You stood up against Kuroi. Taki betrayed us, but he was betrayed too. And Katei has nature to help him. You haven't been depending on him lately.”
He had a shocked look on his face, and then it turned into a happy expression. “You really are kind, Miku. We barely know each other, but you know how to cheer us up. If only you knew how to cheer yourself up,” he said.
“What do you mean? I'm happy that I have friends now,” she asked.
“You're still surrounded by darkness, Miku. Remember when Kodoku told you about the ring? He told you that your mind was dark. He told us it was still dark. Is there something you're not telling us?” he asked sadly.
She hesitated at his question. “What are you talking about, Kikai? All the darkness disappeared when Kodoku saved me,” she said quietly.
“Is that what you're telling yourself? You have friends now, Miku. You can talk to us about anything. We can't just stand here while you're still surrounded by darkness,” he said.
It pained her that Kikai was being persistent about the topic, but what could she do? She didn't want to lie to him anymore. “It's nothing that you guys can do. I realized it around the first year test, but it's nothing important. I guess I just don't feel comfortable with it,” she explained, and it was the truth. They wouldn't be able to understand, so it was only natural to keep it a secret.
“I'll drop it since you don't want to talk about it yet, but I know it's important. If it wasn't important then you would be able to tell us. I just wanted to make sure you were okay,” he said happily.
That surprised her. Maybe Kikai was more like Kodoku than she thought. This was the first real conversation they had. Hopefully they would be able to talk again after the war, but soon she lost all train of thought when she felt something.
The feeling she had the first time Yaburu attacked her came back. It was stronger than before, and she actually had to grab herself to try to calm herself down. She didn't feel sick, but she felt terrified.
“What's wrong? Are you okay?” Kikai asked.
Last time she had the feeling it was to warn her that it was time to fight. Was it the same as before, or was it trying to tell her something else? Why would it make her feel terrified that time though? 'I can't calm down. The only reason I was able to handle this last time was because I was knocked out by Yaburu,' she thought.
“Wake up, everyone! Something is wrong with Miku!” Kikai shouted.
She heard people shouting back, and then she heard people running toward them. She didn't think it was worth waking them up, but she didn't like the feeling. She didn't like being terrified.
“Miku!” Kodoku exclaimed as he ran over to her. “Calm down. You're okay, Miku. You're only panicking because you're not use to having that feeling yet. This is only your second time you felt it, so it's not that much of a surprise.”
“What's wrong with her, Kodoku?” Katei asked.
“Her magic is trying to tell her something. It's probably the magic in her body since the magic from her ring made her sick last time,” he explained. “I think it's trying to say the same thing as before, though. The final battle must be very close.” He embraced her and started to pat her back.
It felt very soothing to her, and it reminded her what her Dad did when she got scared when she was little. Was she afraid to fight her Dad? Was that what the feeling was trying to tell her?
“Kodoku. I've been wondering this for awhile. What is your magic? There's no way that being smart is your magic,” Taki asked.
Now that he mentioned it she never saw Kodoku use magic. He had many of opportunities to use his magic, but he never used it. Was he afraid to use it?
“My magic is fire, but I never use it. I never learned how to control it. I was going to get Yaburu to teach me, but Kuroi sent him after Miku,” he answered.
Magic that he couldn't control. No wonder why he never used it. She would have been afraid to use it because she thought it might end up hitting her friends.
“Then that means I'm basically going against four people,” they heard.
“That voice! It's Kuroi!” Katei exclaimed.
Kuroi appeared on the other side of the room, and he had his blue sword drawn. He looked exactly the same as the last time she saw him, but his magic was stronger. The sword was emitting the power throughout the room, and it sent chills up her back. It was the same as when she battled against Yaburu the second time. How did they increase their magic in such a short amount of time?
“Stop talking nonsense, Kuroi! This isn't the real you and you know it!” Kodoku shouted.
“What are you talking about? I'm following my dream of filling the world with darkness,” he said.
“Roi? Why are you over here? I missed you,” a girl said. Oh no, Mitsuki!
“Mitsuki, get away from here! Kuroi isn't himself!” Miku shouted, but it was too late.
A wave of darkness was already going after Mitsuki. She was only staring at it, no, she was staring beyond it at Kuroi. She cared about Kuroi so much that she probably didn't even notice the darkness going after her. Whenever the darkness reached Mitsuki she heard a scream, but it wasn't a girl scream.
“Taki!” Katei yelled.
