After reading some people's opinion on Luffy vs Katakuri I also wanted to give my thoughts on it.
It has been said that this arc is approaching the climax, therefore, something must have advanced when it all ends. E.G During/After Doffy vs Luffy we witnessed Gear 4th, Got an idea of Luffy's current strength, got a glimpse of an awakening AND by the end of the arc he made an enormous alliance which all advanced the plot forward.
What must happen in this arc?
Sanji and Luffy have to return to the SH.This being the Sanji rescue arc means that he must be back with the SH by the end otherwise it would make the WCI arc meaningless as Luffy and the crew would have completed a full 360 circle.Luffy's return is also guaranteed as the SH cannot and would not head into Wano without the main character (the captain) and it has already been confirmed that Wano will be the arc right after the Reverie.
Luffy must get a powerup heading into the WANO arc OR learn about a new power which he/they will THEN use during the big WANO fight/s.The reason for this is due to the way ODA set up a Katakuri to have a very similar DF as Luffy, this opportunity of a future PU through the discovery of new abilities by Luffy to use in the future or a present PU cannot be missed. It would also make defeating Kaido more plausible with more/new abilities.
What does this mean?
This means that we get to narrow down the possible outcomes of the Katakuri and Luffy fight.
Narrowed down:
In order for Luffy to be able to return to the SH with Sanji, he cannot be KO'd or captured. This then leaves Oda with fewer options:
Breakdown:
We have had various confirmations visually and verbally that Katakuri and Luffy posses very similar DF abilities and I don't believe this is a coincidence.
Luffy stalemates Katakuri or the fight is interrupted/stopped.
I think this is the most logical outcome. If this were to happen the two above points that must occur can still be ticked.During the fight, Luffy can still gain knowledge about awakenings which he will then apply with his abilities in the future and he could still escape with Sanji. This is a very safe option which I think Oda will go with because having Katakuri be defeated will be unrealistic as Luffy needed a lot of help with Cracker who seems inferior to Katakuri. Furthermore, when It's time for Luffy to take down Big Mum, she will need her strongest crew members and it would be unsatisfying to see the SH battle someone that Luffy already defeated, therefore, I think it's important to leave Katakuri undefeated in the reader's eyes to add to the hype of SH vs BMP. Katakuri's defeat would also de-hype awakenings and make them seem less special as a person who has a very similar fruit, minus the awakening was still able to take him out, so would awakenings still be a big deal?
With this option, the plot advancement can be Sanji's return, Luffy's powerup with awakenings and getting a Poneglyph.
IMO Katakuri will be edging him out through the fight which will display to the readers how much of a difference an awakening can make and why it is essential for Luffy to master it in order to be the PK, of course, it can not lead to Luffy's absolute defeat but it can still make him aware that he needs it.
Aware:I am also aware that Katakuri's dignity can be ignored by Oda as he may think that not having someone be defeated by the end will make the arc feel unfinished but following pure logic Luffy should not be able to defeat him but hey, it's a shonen Manga, Katakuri was already nerfed once and it can happen again. Maybe he was nerfed to make his defeat not seem TOO unrealistic. The thing with these predictions is that many options can make sense or be justified through a** pulls but at the end, there can only be one ending so someone has to be wrong.
