Kishi said in an interview years ago that he wasn't planning on writing a love life for Shikamaru. That became pretty invalid with Shikamaru's dream in chapter 678 that's him standing in front of the two couples relevant in his life while talking to his implied love interest.

OT: Hm, like it was brought up, there's the whole Uchiha clan and the way the Sharingan works... In general, I wouldn't say it's a curse though. Just the tragic life style a ninja has to live with, knowing that death can occur at any moment.

Plus there's Shima and Fukasaku.
