I don't know. Initially I was very distraught with the spoilers - I thought Kishimoto hated the character, so that turned me off quite fast to the film. When I watched firsthand, I was actually pleased with the idea of Boruto being a talented, but unmotivated shinobi. He wasn't exactly a cheater until the Chunin Exams (since he didn't start physically cheating until that point in time).
I sort of came to the realization that I would not have been of a fan of the character if he turned out to be another stale talented type. Who just cleans his way through anything, and basically had no real character conflict within himself bar his problem with Naruto. Plus when I looked at it in the bigger picture, his entire concept is unique in the Shonen World. We are usually fed main characters who are simply idiotic in the brain (Naruto, Goku, and Luffy for example) who all have latent powers and strive their hardest in training or what-ever it is to achieve such said goal. Meanwhile Boruto, whom is actually quite intelligent, has all the abilities with no exact effort in mind. He sort of reminds me of Edward Elric in terms of main character comparisons:
From a shallow standpoint? Similar personalities--they both got attitude, cocky, snarky, moody, rebellious, but more caring and sensitive then they let on. Both are tsundere, particularly towards their fathers--on that subject, both have daddy issues, mostly bitter about how their father's absence affects their mother/younger sibling. Both have a soft spot for their mother and younger sibling and is one of their driving points--Edward reviving his mother and attempting getting his brother's body back and Boruto being more upset of how Naruto's absence affects his mother and sister than he himself. Both are child prodigies and things always came easy to them. Similar dynamics to the girl closest to them--neither Boruto and Edward take shit from Sarada and Winry and vice versa, somewhat argumentative relationship, but there's also closeness there that comes from being childhood friends and they treat each other well and clearly care for each other.
Their character arcs are a lot different and so are their motivations of course, but a major part of both of their characters are their strained relationship with their father and ultimately learning to forgive and understand their old men.
It's just as far as shonen protagonists go, most of them are Goku-esque and Boruto reminds me more of Edward Elric (my favorite shonen protagonist bar none btw) and that's a breath of fresh air imo.
--------
I think his development from a child who wants attention and recognition to a shinobi who wants to support the village and his friends from the shadows is a nice touch, but I suppose that's neither here nor there. I know this topic wasn't about how you feel about him as a character or such, but I wanted to talk about this without making a thread about it itself. I can't say I'm not pleased with Future Boruto either.
Just based on the dialogue and his character design, you know things are going to be interesting. At least imo.
