This is my first post and thread! Been lurking around reading this and that and I came to an odd conclusion.

Uchiha clan members need to transplant the eyes of a fellow clansmen to regain their lost sight after abusing mangekyo sharingan powers. Itachi states that the history of the clan was marred by brother on brother violence and what not to obtain power.

So, why didn't families and brothers just trade eyes without killing each other? Does it ever state that the eyes original donor must be deceased for them to work?

Every uchiha wanted the powers of the ms and ems and they wouldn't willingly give up their eyes. And no they don't have to be dead, Madara took Izunas eyes while he was still alive.

If they trade eyes then one would be half-way blind if not all the way, and the other not, so it would be the same. Unless I misunderstood your question.

I belive when Madara "took" Izuna eyes I think they just switched eyes and boom Tobi so yes they can switch eyes and they can be alive just like Madara and Izuna

This question has been explored and the simple answer is, nobody knows. Yes, it would make sense to just trade eyes, but presumably that doesn't work. The reason it doesn't is a mystery.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I thought the eyes darkness became reversed once implanted into a new host. Wasn't itachi going blind before his eyes were given to sasuke? I would gladly switch eyes with my brotheris it meant attaining power.

This^ One person doesn't just take out their own eyes and put someone else's in for EMS. They have to fuse and that is why the pattern of the EMS eyes looks like the patterns of the MS eyes combined.

Nobody would want to be blind for the rest of their lives (except Izuna). So one had to die if eyes were taken.
