step 1 - read the manga

step 2 - this didn't make sense to me, although it is brand new information that is cohesive to the story

step 3 - ass pull, plot hole, bad writing etc etc

Question:

What could possibly require the assignment of ALL of Kiri's 7 shinobi swordsmen?

These are elite of the elite of the kiri village just below their Mizukage.

Assigning all of these ninja AT ONCE to one mission is a severely bad idea strategically. Especially when their only opposition appears to be a genin team (which also indicates how important this mission is for the leaf village, Read: not at all).

They would take on separate or at least teams of two missions to spread their strength across any war front. That would make sense. This doesn't make any sense at all.

Sorry kishi you should have done better than this.

I give a 2/5 for bad logic.

It's a little unfair to say this. Could be a number of reasons. There could be a lot of good explanations for that

There are a number of possible reasons why these two teams meet. Though the one I think is most likely is that Gai's team was told to patrol or protect a certain area that was classified low risk. However the Seven Ninja Swordsmen were tasked with attack or entering Konoha through the same route that Gai and his team was patrolling. This does makes sense, because if Mist managed to gain intel on the positions of the Konoha troops then they can find the least guarded area to attack from.

Really... during the bloody mist, a lot of things were happening.

Gai was chuunin (3-man team = chuunin, 4-man team = some genin and at least one captain), so this is the period when Rin died. The bloody mist was planing an invasion to Konoha, they were going to use Rin as a time bomb... in other words, the Seven Shinobi Swordsman could be very related to this context.

Kirigakure was going to invade Konoha. Why do you think this logic is flawed?

In the other way, I think Kishimoto perfectly created a nexus between Rin's death and Gai's past.

Anyways, for my part, the context seems to be clear... this is the Third Shinobi World War.

Giving some background to Katakitsu's answer. I feel his answer HAS a solid base, due the reasons I gave. Kirigakure and Konoha were in a middle of a war at that time.

No I'm sorry disagree with all apologists for this chapter.

The seven ninja swordsmen are not a "team" as everyone seems to be suggesting. When we saw them fighting in the forth war they seemed to be all extremely good individual fighters. We saw no advanced team work that would make me think "Huh they are kinda like Kiri's Sanin".

Ergo they are an "order" or Brotherhood or perhaps even some manner of cult. That doesn't mean they would all go together to fight one battle. They are more effective if they are spread out where they won't get in each other's way. This was obviously Kishi looking around for "strong" opponents to hype the eight gates and Might Dai.

Its just so contrived that they just happen to meet up with ALL OF THE NINJA SWORDSMEN. If it had been a few of the lesser known ones, they could likely have died by Dai's hand then I would have said "Fair enough kishi this kinda makes sense" But this.....sorry its impossibly contrived.

Possible but still I find it contrived. Kishi usually manages to keep my suspension of disbelief from breaking but this chapter just made me go wtf.
