It was a superb film!

There was a twist at the end? From how I remember it, he told the man a second story to test his faith. The man chose to believe the story about the Tiger which was the one which was true.

Someone to discuss with..Do you believe the second story was just made up? Or was Richard Parker(tiger) just the animalistic instinct inside of Pi,the will to make him live?

I am a college level film student and Life of Pi is literally my favourite movie I have ever seen.

Aang Lee deserved that award for best director. He made 'the unmakeable movie' a reality and also a masterpiece.

Well, the second story was made up.

The story of Richard Parker was true; the report that he read at the end confirmed this for the viewers! :p

He only told the second story to test the man's faith. Remember how he said earlier in the film ''how can we know how strong our faith is until it's put to the test''?

The film has very deep views about faith which I loved.

How did you interpret the end?
Okay basically, there is no definitive ending. There is no right ending, there is no wrong ending. If you're taking the film literally (which tbh you kinda shouldn't, you'd be missing the point) Then the story about Pi being the tiger would be the true one.

But the whole film is about storytelling. It has themes about religion and literature and there is a LOT of foreshadowing in the first part of the film before the lifeboat that hints this (you should watch it back you understand a lot more) The general idea is that there is no right or wrong version of the story. It's just about which version you prefer, this is a commentary on religion. Like, sure- some guy called Jesus probably didn't actually part the red sea but it makes a better story. People remember it and the moral is still conveyed. Everytime I rewatch it (third time now) I get something new out of it, it's kind of beautiful.

But just think about it,the second story represents the cold hard truth, while the first one represents God,the impossible made possible by the almighty.Thats why he asks the guy, which do you prefer, the truth or one that makes you feel at ease?

If the second story were true,Pi would be the tiger, his mother the orangutan, the sailor the zebra and evil cook the hyena.Just try and interpret it that way,it makes more sense xd

No no no of course I understood all of that. I got entirely what it was going for and the whole 'you choose' ambiguity at the end is basically a Nolan ending. It let's the audience make their own assumptions. Therefore there is no right or wrong and the moral is all that matters, that's what the book was going for and that's what the film was going for. :D
