There has been countless arguments about Itachi and Nagato. Mostly on who happens to be stronger.
In all honesty, the real question is not who is stronger, but who would WIN.
Nagato was an incredibly powerful ninja, who had the power of the Rinnegan in his possession. He had mastered hundreds of Justus and was capable of destroying villages. This was evident with the hidden leaf of konoha.
Itachi on the other hand, was a master of Genjustu and ocular justus. He was very skilled with basic ninja tools. In addition to this, I believe he was very skilled in Taijutsu. Itachi also had in his possession two items, "an ethereal sword with the ability to seal anything it pierces into the gourd that serves as its hilt, and Yata Mirror, a shield that could reflect any attack."
Now that we know a bit of both (There is still a plethora of information I've left out), let's move onto analyzing a possible fight.
The Sword of Totsuka is the biggest reason why I feel Itachi could possibly win. Though, to counter this, Gedo Mazo is a reason why Nagato could win.
Conclusion: It is foolish to compare two individuals like this. A great example of this would be when Pain killed Jiraiya. Though I'm sure MANY could argue that Jiraiya could defeat Naruto (Not the current Naruto, but when he fought Pain). Certain individuals have characteristics which give them advantages over certain others. Thus, I feel even though Nagato is more powerful, Itachi would win.
It really comes down to how one analyzes the information given.
